The New Brighton Pier opened on 7th September 1867 but was not fully completed until 9th April 1868 when it finally passed over to the privately owned Pier Company.

There was a passenger pier and, adjacent, a promenade pier. The pier was 550 feet long and 70 feet wide. The Promenade Pier was proclaimed as "one of the finest in the country".

The only entrance was by a flight of steps from the gangway of the Ferry Pier and cost 2d to enter. The pier had a handsome saloon, refreshment rooms, bazaars, a raised platform for a band and there was seating all round the parameter area.

Above the saloon was a further, smaller promenade area - which cost a further one penny admission - probably used by the more affluent - above this on a third level was a viewing area with fixed telescopes to view the shipping on the River Mersey.

In 1900 the promenade pier was extended and connected to the new promenade which had been completed in 1899 - then there were two points of entry to the promenade pier.

The Magnificent New Brighton Tower in Edwardian Times - The Age of Illumination

Did you know there was over 30,000 Lightbulbs used to light up the Tower and Grounds?

It cost £120,000 to build the New Brighton Tower, which was completed in 1900. Over 1,000 tons of steel were used in the construction. From the ground to the top of the Copper Ball on the flag-staff, it measured 567 feet, 6 inches. It was actually 567 feet high itself and 621 feet above sea level, becoming the highest structure in the United Kingdom. But the Construction of this fine building came at a cost of Death and Mishaps. We have many tales of Death and Destruction that surround this Cursed Tower that lasted only 22 Years…Our Autumnal Ghost Walks and Tea Time Tales give an insight into life during thr Victorian Era all the way to Wartime when the Bombs dropped on Wallasey

The New Brighton Tower and Boating Lake

Did you know that in Edwardian Times, there were 30,000 Fairy Lights, Lighting up the Tower and Gardens at Night?

The Tower Gardens covered 35 acres. There was a large Japanese Cafe at the lakeside, where the real Gondoliers had Venetian Gondolas. There was also a fountain and seal pond in the old quarry, with its rockery. Then there was the Parisian Tea Garden where one could enjoy a cup of tea and watch the Pierrots. Situated in the trees was a restaurant called 'The Rock Point Castle' . Edwardian Times were prosperous for the Tower up until the outbreak of WWI. The Tower was then to Close to the public, never to open again...Our Autumnal Ghost Walks and Tea Time Tales give an insight into life during thr Victorian Era all the way to Wartime when the Bombs dropped on Wallasey
