Another Urban Legend of Wallasey is the Ghosts Story of the Perch Rock Lighthouse

An old 19th Century Maritime Tale - New Brighton Lighthouse like many of the safety structures of the seas around the UK is Haunted by the Ghost of an old Keeper called Maudsley who was sent to the role of Lighthouse Keeper as punishment for his lustful urges towards young Ladies. It was here that he met his ghastly end. Local Legend has been passed down through generations of His Ghost which is said to patrol the area in search of Young Ladies who are foolish enough to visit the beach after dark.

Did you know that Fort Perch Rock wasn’t the only Battery in Wallasey?

On the edge of Vale Park stands a Victorian archway with twin turreted towers, another interesting remnant of the Maritime history of New Brighton.

Built in 1858, This was New Brighton’s second battery, for the more famous one on the shore had been completed by 1829, but instead of being conspicuous in position like Fort Perch Rock the Magazines battery was hidden. It was called “A snake in the grass” and was built of red sandstone and today only the gatehouse and parts of the walls remain – houses having been built inside. Redcoats patrolled the defence day and night. It is said that 1 still guards the Tower today 👻⚔️

Old records show that this Victorian Battery was mostly consisted of a grassy bank concealing a number of Cannons. Passing years rendered it obsolete as The French and Spanish threat reduced, and the Egremont Promenade was built in front of it.

The death blow to its military associations came in 1912 when the War Office put it up for sale. The Liverpool Yacht Club purchased it for £1,620 in that year.

Perch Rock Battery and The Devil’s Nest of New Brighton

The Devil’s Nest’, a cluster of little shanties and cafes which stood above the New Brighton sands nearly two centuries ago. This is one of the few pictures of it still in existence. They sprang up in the 1830’s and were inhabited by a colony of donkey drivers and shore hawkers. The Nest was rather noisy and a rough community. They were cleared about 1871 and replaced by the ‘Ham and Eggs Parade’.

Maritime Disasters near to Black Rock Cove - The Wreck of the Pelican in 1793

The ship was a small brig craft fitted with a number of cannon designed to capture French merchant shipping for a profit under a letter of marquee from the British government. She was crewed and outfitted in the Mersey, and on 20 March 1793 was taking her owners and their families and friends on a pleasure and working up cruise in the mouth of the river. On board were 94 sailors and approximately 40 civilians, including several women. Disaster Struck and the weather took a sudden turn for the worse and the ship began to rock violently, causing many of those aboard to go below decks, worsening the impending tragedy.

The vessel breached on to the rocks situated near where the New Brighton Floral Pavilion is today, Local Smugglers took it upon themselves to plunder the ship. Laws at the time stated that if no persons were aboard the ship at the time the cargo/booty could be plundered by anybody. The sad fact is that any of the people who would have still been alive would have been killed. The smugglers then transported their bodies into tunnels situated where these tunnels we are standing in today, leaving the ship in an abandoned state, they were now free to plunder the ship.

Upon the building of the Palace Theatre in the 1870s, parts of these tunnels were breached and an awful stench was apparent. It was on further inspection that the bones of the souls of the Pelican were found and it took a hell of a lot of industrial cleaning before the stench was finally removed. The Palace Theatre Building Caught Fire in 1916 and no longer exists being replaced by Granada Bowl in the 20th Century.
