💔 Tributes are being paid to a “hero” D-Day veteran from Wallasey who has died aged 101.

John Dennett, one of the UK’s last surviving D-Day veterans, died peacefully surrounded by his family.

He was just 17 when he joined the Royal Navy in 1942, later serving as a gunner on a tank landing craft during some of the most significant operations of the Second World War.

Mr Dennett played a key role in the D-Day landings, helping troops come ashore at Sword Beach in Normandy and transporting wounded soldiers back to the UK. He went on to take part in major Allied campaigns in North Africa, Italy and France.

After the war, he dedicated his life to supporting others — becoming a leading figure in the Royal British Legion and helping raise funds for the Poppy Appeal. In 2022, he was awarded the British Empire Medal for his service.

He also left a lasting legacy in the community, founding Ashville FC in 1949 — a club that continues to thrive today.

Tributes have described him as a “true legend” and “a guiding light” whose impact will never be forgotten.

Thanks for your years of service John, may you rest in peace ❤️
