A wonderful essay in Disegno about Jihlava Municipal Arena, a new multifunctional venue by CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF.

Helen Gonzalez Brown writes: The arena in Jihlava, Czechia, replaces an ice rink built in the 1950s that had fallen into disrepair. “The steel trusses were too thin to sustain any fire resistance, and the arena was actually falling apart,” Chybík explains. “There was a 30-year debate about whether they should keep the arena in this original location, or move it outside the city.”

‘Reimagining public space has become a cornerstone of Chybík + Krištof’s work,’ she continues, ‘particularly in the practice’s hometown of Brno.’

Speaking with Disegno, Ondřej Chybík explains: “As an architect, you have to find the right moments to celebrate the beauty of the city and to create this relationship between citizens and their public facilities.”

One of the most exciting British designers working today, Sebastian Cox RDI has been banging the drum for sustainable, nature-led design since Cox’s studio first hit the scene in 2010.

Sebastian, Brogan Cox and their team are continuing to prove themselves much more than a design studio. They harvest and mill their British-grown timber, develop masterplans for wooded and wild landscapes, and create heirloom furniture, timber structures and joinery using zero-waste, fully carbon-accountable processes.

In short, they’re a blueprint for regenerative design business everywhere – which is why we’re especially excited to be working with them and their vision of balancing bold, beautiful design with big-picture environmental thinking.

Image-maker and construction co-ordinator Kαყҽ Sσɳɠ is a part of Material Cultures Material Cultures and co-founding director of Flimsy Works ᖴᒪIᗰᔕY, a studio that uses readily available materials to build crudely and with character.

Having spent years at Turner Prize-winning collective Assemble, she is now co-developing the practical and pedagogical infrastructure required to support post-carbon futures at Material Cultures. With Flimsy Works, she delivers projects that connect communities to the natural environment by building low-intervention structures that tell stories about shifting landscapes. Her photography allows her to position her work without distinction between what is found and designed. Finding, collecting, taking is as much part of Kaye's practice as it is creating, connecting and making things.

A qualified architect, Kaye was awarded the RIBA Eastern Region Prize and who, together with Flimsy Works, was included in New Architects 5, the Architecture Foundation's definitive index of the UK's best new architects. In 2025, Kaye also won the Arts Foundation Futures Award in Design as one of the most promising creatives in the UK.

We're delighted to have Kaye as part of the Zetteler 26 for '26! Read about the rest of the wonderful people featured on our website via the link in our bio.

In the UK, 18 million people are hard of hearing – yet there is no dedicated centre for the Deaf community. Now urban planner and activist Amanprit Arnold has made it her mission, writes in The Guardian.

DeafCity Hub aims to create a purpose-built cultural space dedicated to empowering and platforming the Deaf community, demonstrating the value of Deaf cultural spaces for Deaf and hearing people alike.

Now its campaign has taken the next step. As the Guardian reports: ‘This month, the project has landed a year-long “meanwhile” space (a building awaiting redevelopment) through a partnership with Westminster city council and the Oxford Street Development Corporation, which gives her the chance to prove a place like this is needed.’

Jihlava Municipal Arena is a new multifunctional venue by CHYBÍK + KRIŠTOF. Located on the border of Jihlava's historic centre, the arena – a structure usually confined to the periphery of cities – sits next to a park and a university, in the continuity of these two spaces.

It has a capacity of 5,650 spectators, extending the stadium's original function by creating a versatile space adapted both to its primary sporting use within state-of-the-art facilities, and to a broad spectrum of other activities and their respective audiences.

The public areas nested throughout the four-building "stadium campus" allow it to merge with the surrounding urban landscape. Rather than marking an interruption in the existing city structure, the arena serves as a transparent and fluid transition between distinct typologies, reviving the area, opening it up to new functions, and ultimately extending the city centre beyond its historical bounds.

The project breaks down the typically monolithic arena typology into a porous campus of four buildings, two of them newly designed. Opening in all directions and integrating routes and diverse public spaces, the campus connects the surrounding park, residential street, university building and brewery site.

Described as one of the most influential fashion journalists in the world, Charlie Porter’s hit What Artists Wear was an extraordinary piece of non-fiction. Well, his follow-up and first novel Nova Scotia House is similarly insightful and powerful.

Telling a story about q***r love, creativity and community, Nova Scotia House takes us to the heart of a relationship, a community and an era. It is both a love story and a lament; bearing witness to the enduring pain of the AIDS pandemic.

There’s not tonnes of fiction in the Zetteler bookshelf, but Nova Scotia House has more than earned its place.

On Friday 9 October, you can make a real difference. Hackney Night Shelter annual sponsored Sleep Out is back for its fourth year – and more people are needed to take part.

The Sleep Out is not intended to replicate the dangers and harsh conditions experienced by people sleeping rough. Participants will gather together in the evening for soup, live music, and to hear from former shelter guests. In the morning, everyone moves indoors for a cooked breakfast. It is safe and suitable for all ages.

By joining the Sleep Out, you help raise crucial funds and raise awareness of their vital work. Hackney Night Shelter helps people facing homelessness move into longer-term accommodation.

Having recently debuted Material Matters, Useful Totem by Alexie Sommer and Quentin Delion has had a Life Cycle Assessment to evaluate the embodied carbon footprint. This process found that the collection has less than 5% of the embodied carbon footprint in comparison to similar new objects made from virgin materials.

Demonstrating a responsible approach to design for the climate crisis, the sculptures layer reclaimed glass, cork and wood, and are beautiful installations for the home as well as functioning sets of tableware for eating food and storing leftovers.

Joel De Mowbray YES MAKE speaks with FRAME about the fight against construction waste. Running Tipping Point East with Material Cultures and RESOLVE Collective, the ambition is to build the infrastructure that makes a more sustainable construction industry possible – making circular design the status quo, not a nice to have.

The scale of Tipping Point East is extraordinary. As Joel explained: ‘Even at the smallest scale it’s a 26-tonne lorry, up to 44 tonnes for the big ones, and it might be 10 to 20 vehicles for a job – a completely different level of planning.’

Last night, DeafCity Hub launched its campaign for the UK’s first purpose-built space for Deaf culture.

Films such as The Sound of Metal and CODA have brought Deaf experiences closer to the cultural mainstream, and the pioneering work of Deaf Architecture Front. has raised the profile of DeafSpace design in the UK’s built environment. But there is still an astonishing lack of central cultural or community hubs for the 18 million adults (one in three) who are Deaf, or have hearing loss or tinnitus.

and are on a mission to change this with their vision for DeafCity Hub: a purpose-built cultural space dedicated to empowering and platforming the Deaf community. DeafCity Hub will demonstrate the value of Deaf cultural spaces for Deaf and hearing people alike.

And fittingly, Wednesday is International Day of Sign Languages!
