Every year we embrace Organic September as a banner under which we can talk about the benefits of agriculture with a reduced reliance on chemicals and monocultures.
I grew up with an amazing Papa who still grew vegetables on every inch of his garden. Born in the early 1900s, he was part of the Dig for Victory generation, but even in the 1970s and ’80s, his garden was balanced like a finely tuned machine. He would pull his overalls on over his waistcoat and shirt sleeves and spend hours making sure everything was just right. When it came to his compost heap, weeds and pest control, he paid attention and knew what worked and what didn’t. He had a special section of flowers for the vase and my favourite, radishes that he grew just for me, as the rest of the family detested them. Is there any better show of love than producing good, delicious food?

Earlier this month, three members of the Equal Exchange UK team travelled to our global headquarters near Boston to celebrate an incredible milestone – 40 years of Equal Exchange.

From exploring factory operations and strengthening collaboration between our UK and US teams, to joining our annual summit alongside farmers, worker-owners and partners from around the world, it was an inspiring week of learning, connection and shared purpose.

A particular highlight was taking part in discussions on the future of small farmer tea and the exciting progress of bringing tea blending and packing in-house at Equal Exchange UK.

Our decaf coffees regularly steal the spotlight among our bestsellers—and that’s no accident.
Many decaffs on the market almost taste like an afterthought but we use specialty green beans from Sol Y Café in Peru because choosing decaf should not mean settling for disappointing flavour and quality.
As you would expect from a certified organic coffee range, we chose the chemical free Swiss Water Process as our decaffeination method and we've been using it for over 20 years. It uses Green Coffee Extract (water with soluble coffee compounds) to draw out the caffeine molecules while the flavour and other compounds remain within the coffee. So no nasty chemicals, just pure natural decaffeination. Enjoy!
