The equinox has passed. Nights are now a little bit longer than days. The House Martins have flown - or have they? As far as I could see they had an excellent year around the eaves of the building - the nest by my window became three nests. Three+ pairs arrived at the Pen-y-Bont Hotel in May and over 20 individuals departed last week. So I was quite surprised to see a pair returning to the nest today above our Thomas Lloyd double room. Why? If you watch the birds regularly you can enter into their world a little bit. When they are inside their nests they communicate with each other in what sounds like conversation, with complex phrases that repeat over time. They do take some interest in humans when you wave or make directional sound towards them. I have been lucky enough to experience a family of Martins flying around me, repeatedly diving down close. They weren't threatened by my presence - I can say that as they were not uttering their loud single note alarm call. Did they recognise me as the person who lives in the room next to their nest? So I watched the late staying birds as they flew to and from the nest. They were in a hurry and paying no attention to me. They appeared to be flying out in a loop on "practice runs". I imagined that they were young, not quite ready yet for the long journey, but aware that they had no time to lose to get prepared. Maybe. There are so many birds here in Talyllyn, even when the Martins are away in South Africa, so plenty to watch in Autumn and Winter.
