This is Duke Street tonight.
Christmas lights are up, the city centre is full, and yet our end of town has been blocked off again during one of the busiest periods of the year.

As an independent business, we pay our rates and BID levy the same as everyone else, but whenever events are put on, this is what happens:
• Barriers across the road
• Access cut off
• Footfall diverted away
• Street food stalls placed in the main areas selling similar things to what we do
• And the businesses on the outside edges — the ones open all year — become a dead zone.

I’m genuinely happy to see Truro busy at Christmas, but the layout means the same central stretch gets everything, while the quieter streets get nothing but the impact. It makes December incredibly difficult for small shops and independents who rely on this month to survive.

I’m proud of my business and proud to be part of Truro, but I just wish the planning took all of the streets into account — not just the big ones.

This photo says it all.
