Hello everyone 👋 Since Taguchi-Ya canteen is closed, we’ve been slowly moving forward, taking challenges and learning along the way.

This Tuesday April 21st, Angelique and Angus kindly let us use their shop for a pop-up takeaway event. There’ll be Domburi rice bowls, side salads, miso soup, etc. Please stop by for your lunch, snack or dinner takeaway! 12-6pm or until sold out. See you there! Yoshi🙏🌾

It’s all done! We are tidying up and cleaning the canteen while thinking about the miracle of these past eight years. Thank you so much to everyone who came these past few weeks, everyone who couldn’t come and everyone who has visited Taguchi-Ya since we opened. We were overwhelmed by so many warm messages. We are truly grateful that Taguchi-Ya is supported by such wonderful people and is accepted by the Totnes community. Thank you so much!

For me, at the center of it all are my family, Mona, Fuchan and the late Chris, who are my source of love, motivation, wisdom and energy.


Chris translated my thoughts and passion for the canteen into simple sentences for the post just before Christmas 2021. With those, I would like to close the door of Taguchi-Ya Canteen🙏❤️

“At this difficult time, when so many of us of feeling anxious and stressed, it can be tempting to focus on our differences. I hope it may be helpful to remember the things we all have in common, such as the enjoyments of sharing good food together.”

Dear customers,

Goodbyes are always abrupt. I have been thinking about this for a long time, but suddenly, all the pieces have come together to make the final decision. I have decided to close Taguchi-Ya canteen.

There are several reasons, but ultimately, I felt that I had to stop. It is very painful and difficult to close this canteen that has grown thanks to everyone’s kindness and love. But the time has come.

A huge thank you to Matteo and Sarah for giving me this opportunity and encouraging me to take on this challenge, to all our incredible staff, new and old, who have worked so hard and had so much fun together, all the suppliers, Annies for providing us with the space, and all the wonderful, supportive and loyal customers. I can’t thank you all enough.

I am very sorry again for the sudden closure, but “All’s well that ends well”. We will be open as usual until June 14th. Thank you for your continued support until the end.
