First look: Union Square/Street demolition & redevelopment plans.

The redevelopment of Union Square and the surrounding area would be the biggest development in this part of town since, well, Union Square.

Back in the early 1980s, Albert Road was demolished to make way for the Haldon Centre, a shopping arcade later renamed Union Square. It was promised to bring long-term prosperity to the town. The Plan now is to demolish it entirely (apart from the multi-storey car park) along with the rest of that side of Union Street down to, and including, the Nationwide building (Coster's as was). The indoor market would remain.
