☀️ Thinking of heading to the beach to cool off?
Our colleagues at RNLI Lifeguards South & East Devon are on duty every day from 10am–6pm at Teignmouth, Dawlish Warren and Exmouth beaches.
Remember:
🔴🟡 Swim between the red and yellow flags
🌊 Check tide times before visiting the coast
👀 Follow the advice of our lifeguards
We know the temptation to cool off in the sea, rivers, lakes and other inland water spots can be high during warm weather.
However, it's important to remember that the water is often much colder than it looks. Sudden immersion can trigger cold water shock, causing an uncontrollable gasp response, rapid breathing and an increased heart rate, which can quickly lead to panic.
The RNLI warns that water below 15°C can cause cold water shock, even during warm weather.
If you find yourself struggling in the water, remember to Float to Live:
✔️ Tilt your head back with your ears submerged
✔️ Relax and control your breathing
✔️ Use your hands to help you stay afloat if needed
✔️ Don't worry if your legs sink, everyone floats differently
Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety if you can.
Where possible, always choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags.
📞 In a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
