A little piece of Bedford history…with a mystery still to solve 🔎
The magnificent painting of Sir Walter Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth I, has hung in the Bedford Hotel for many years, but its journey to Tavistock remains something of a mystery.
Local historian Geri Parlby has delved into the story of the painting, its Victorian artist Charles Stuart, and Raleigh’s surprising links with Tavistock.
We are delighted to share Geri’s fascinating article and perhaps one day we’ll uncover the missing chapter of the painting’s journey to the Bedford.
