A goodbye to The Tavern, as told by Hannah’s camera roll! 📸

Here’s a little highlight reel of some of our best moments over the last couple of years ❤️ Each picture has its own caption with a description, so be sure to check them out! There are some absolute corkers 😄

Working here and serving this community has been such a wonderful experience, and on a personal level I would like to thank not only our locals who made it so, but Gareth Richards and the entire team. Normally I post to this page as some disembodied voice for the business, but for this post I would like to talk to you all as me, Hannah - hello! If you don’t know me already, where on Earth have you been the last two years?😅

Hospitality has its highs and lows, but I’m proud to say that The Tavern has given me some of the highest highs in my entire working career so far. I know, like many of you reading, that I will miss this place very much. Even if I was already leaving, I had hoped to keep coming back to host the quiz, work bustling Saturday night shifts, and for The Tavern to become MY local pub. It was never going to be easy to say goodbye to this place, so for this to be how it happens is devastating 💔

This decision is nothing short of heartbreaking, and the work Gareth has put in over the last four years is so evident - to be losing this is still a shock, even now a week after closing our doors. But the team we’ve had here has been so fantastic throughout everything, and as utterly ridiculous as we can all get, I have never known a team of people that stick together and bond like we have 😊

We’ve hosted people’s weddings, birthdays, christenings - but we’ve also been that local pub where you can come and talk to the team if you’re ever feeling down, if you’ve got good news to share, or if you just need an ear to listen. We have been all of this and more, and I am proud to have led this team alongside Gareth who have been such integral parts of all your lives - even if that may only have been for a short while. We can walk away knowing for a fact that lifelong friendships and relationships have been made, and to everyone on the team I wish you nothing but the best, wherever life takes you next ❤️

As we close our doors, we know that we have not failed. The turn out we had for our final day of trading, sharing lots of hugs, tears, and happy memories, speaks so much to how well Gareth and this business has done being part of the village. The impact we have made on individuals, and vice versa, will never be measured in sales reports. These large breweries will never understand how vital it is for the village local to keep going, and we hope that you all know how much we fought to keep The Tavern in business. We were up against challenges that a lot of much larger companies are also struggling with right now as well, so I think we can hold our heads high knowing that we gave it one Hell of a good go 🍺🥳

To all our regulars, we WILL miss you. Whether we saw you once a day, once a week, or once a month, it doesn’t matter. You all helped to make The Tavern an unforgettable workplace ✨️

Thank you to everyone who made The Tavern special. For me, for Gareth, and for the team. We couldn’t have done it without you all. I wish all of you the best, and hopefully we’ll see you all around someday!

With love, and a few hard quiz questions up my sleeve for old times sake,

Hannah ###

CLEARANCE SALE: We will be back open on FRIDAY 10th, 12-5, for more sales. Just as today, it is CASH ONLY.

While we appreciate the enthusiasm today brought, here are a few gentle reminders before we open our doors again:

- if something is screwed/nailed to a wall in any way, it is NOT for sale. Please do not remove something like a painting/picture. It risks damaging the walls, which we would then be liable to pay for, and the majority of the pictures are not ours to sell in the first place.

- the only furniture being sold is our back dining room chairs (not pictured), and what remains of some outdoor furniture. Any tables and chairs in the front of the pub, plus the outdoor furniture on the roadside, is not ours to sell.

- we will be open strictly between 12pm and 5pm. This process is soul destroying enough without folk turning up at 9:30am or 8pm and banging on the doors. Please, only come during the allotted time 🙏

- as last time, we are not reserving anything over Facebook or telephone. It is first come, first served.

- this whole sale is collection only. We do NOT offer a delivery service...

- a lot of items have been pre-priced (see images), but any questions about items without a price will not be answered until the day. We are open to sensible negotiation, but as we are not reserving anything online, prices for larger items (such as mirrors, dining chairs, outdoor furniture, brolleys) will only be discussed with those who come on the day.

We hope you understand where we're coming from, and that we're just trying to get this process done as seamlessly as possible in the time frame we have. We are monitoring our social media less and less now, so these notes are mostly to answer any questions you may have in the comments ❤️ thank you for your understanding, and we'll see you on Friday!

To everyone who has something booked with us beyond the 5th of July - next week Hannah and Gaz will be contacting EVERYONE about their bookings. Doesn't matter if it's a dinner reservation, B&B accommodation, or an event - we will be in touch.

If you don't hear anything this weekend please don't panic, we have not forgotten you. But while we are still trading we are spending our time saying goodbye to this village, our fantastic locals, and focusing on keeping morale as high as we can in our final days. We want to go out with a bang, and it not be some somber affair.

Next week will be when we start the difficult task of formally closing. Please bear with us as we get through that process.

Many thanks,
Hannah and Gaz

A message to all our customers.
This is never a post we wanted to make, but unfortunately we have had to make the decision to close The Tavern. Our final day of trading will be July 5th, 2026.
Between rising costs in wages, VAT, business rates, rent, our stock, and utilities, it is no longer sustainable for us to keep going. Even if we were getting more people through the door, we are fighting a losing battle against everything else. We are not alone in having financial struggles, and we understand that the strain most people are under - both personally, and in business. But we are running at a loss here, and after so long of ticking by week by week, we are at a stage now where we can no longer keep going.
We want to take this time to thank all of our regulars who have kept coming in week after week, and have supported us since we opened our doors four years ago. You welcomed us to Tansley with open arms, and we are so grateful to everyone who has been a part of our short-lived history here. We know from your feedback that you all love what we offer here, but without the footfall we need to keep the lights on, the staff paid, and the beer on order, we unfortunately don’t have another choice.
We will do Hannah’s last quiz as planned after our Sunday dinner service on the 5th - after this, we will close our doors for the final time. If by some miracle we hit record-breaking sales this weekend, we may be able to continue on longer - if anything changes, we will of course let people know. But we are planning for a worst case scenario, and as it stands the most likely outcome is that we will be closing down, and this will be our final weekend of trading.
Thank you to all the staff who have been a part of the team here at The Tavern, past and present. We could not have gone on for as long as we did without your dedication.

Thanks Gareth

With it shaping up to be one of the hottest weeks in the UK's history, we've made some changes here at The Tavern to make this heat more bearable for everyone 🌞

Firstly, we've removed any menu items that require us to use the grill 🍔 Given it's meant to reach 38 Celsius this week, we cannot ask our kitchen staff to use an item that pushes out heat all day in a non air-conditioned kitchen. The safety of our team is paramount, and they will be put first this week.

As a result, see our Hot Weather Menu below! This will run today until Friday, but if the weather continues on into the weekend then we may continue to run it 😎

Secondly, our tea and coffee machine is on sabbatical! ☕ We're doing all we can across our kitchen and front of house departments to minimise unnecessary heat production, so the decision has been made to give it a rest for the week. Once temperatures drop to a reasonable level, we'll get it back on ♨

Lastly, if you do come to visit us, please make sure you're following staff guidance. We're keeping our doors and windows closed this week to stop excess heat getting in - we're an old building, so any kind of temperature control is difficult! 🥵 But we've got a cellar to keep cold so that we can keep running our beer lines and soft drinks, so please help us help you by not pinning open the doors ❤

Stay hydrated this week, and in the shade where you can! If we have to make any decisions about kitchen closures, we will update you all on here!
