On Monday the 15th of June, we sadly lost our great friend, relative and at the age of 98, our oldest serving customer; John Hunt, affectionately known as 'Grandad'. The name stuck, due to him being Terry's father in law, Anne's dad and Grandad to their children. Terry always called him Grandad and everyone else followed suit!

He had frequented The Plough for over 60 years, often as a lunchtime customer, with a newspaper to do the crossword, he joined us frequently for Super Sunday, often leaving a bit wobbly, but he will be most fondly remembered by us, for playing crib or dominoes on a Tuesday night. These nights would begin with the arrival of Mick Oram at 8pm, Grandad would join him around 8.30, followed by Howard Simonds, Guy Elliott, Jonathan Stacey, Kevan Barrett and if the bar allowed, Terry and Jacki would join in! These nights would be full of stories of the good old days, farming, beating, fishing and the daft things the old boys got up to in their younger years! Sometimes these nights would go on till 2, 3 in the morning having laughed a lot and with a few bursts of old songs and poems and the drinking game of Colonel P**f! They truly were fun nights and we miss them.

We will miss Grandad so much as he was such a character, a huge part of The Plough and loved by all.

His funeral will take on Thursday the 16th of July at St Mary's Church, Silchester at 11am. Followed by a wake at The Plough, of course!
All who knew him are invited to pay their respects and to join us here to raise a toast.

We are no longer going to open on a Monday evening. Moving forward, we will be closed all day on a Monday, except Bank Holidays. Normal hours from a Tuesday lunchtime. 🍻🥖

There is a sweepstake for the World Cup here at The Plough. There are still a number of countries available. Each envelope containing a country is £5. The envelopes will be open on the cup final, to reveal the winner. 1st Prize - £120 2nd Prize - £80 3rd Prize - £40. Come and get your tickets!! 🍻⚽️🏆

Thank you so much for the members of the North Hampshire branch of CAMRA for coming to present Terry and The Plough with the CAMRA Pub of the Year Award for North Hampshire. Everyone here at The Plough are thrilled to be given the recognition and are so proud of our beautiful pub.

Thank you so much for so many of our lovely customers for coming out on Tuesday evening and congratulating Terry and celebrating with us.
