The "I’m Not Lucky, Except When I Am" Chronicles ☕️
I’m not exactly the type of person who’s "blessed by the gods"—I mean, my bank account is still waiting for that lottery jackpot notification. But looking back, I’ve got some pretty weirdly specific luck.
The Great Window Blunder
Once, I parked my car right in the middle of Stone and—in a stroke of absolute genius—left the windows wide open. Just... completely down. When I came back, I realized the interior of my car had been on full display to the world, yet not a single thing was missing. Apparently, the local thieves were either on holiday or felt sorry for my memory span.
The Tire Knight in Aldi
Then there was the time my tire decided to give up on life right as I was heading to my shop. I was stuck in an Aldi car park, clueless and ready to throw my entire savings at a tow truck. Just as I was about to dial for help, a man tapped on my window (perfect timing, honestly).
He had an electric pump and offered to fill it up so I could limp to a garage instead of paying for a gold-plated tow. He even gave me the address of Basic Tyre. Total repair cost? £20. That tire is still going strong today! I’m convinced he was a Guardian Angel who moonlighted as a mechanic.
Joy, Her Husband, & The Napkin Dynasty
Opening my little cafe was the dream, but meeting Joy and her husband was the real prize. These two are health icons—fit, disciplined, and genuinely the loveliest humans.
Get this: for months, they’ve been bringing me stacks of napkins stamped with a cute Maneki-neko (lucky cat). They also keep me stocked with paper bags and are basically my unpaid PR team, constantly dragging their friends over to the shop. I’ve basically forgotten what it’s like to actually buy napkins. They are my emotional anchors. Joy remembers things I’ve said that I don’t even remember saying!
• "Oh, I love Japanese plum wine." (Did I tell anyone that?)
• "Jeju Island face cream is amazing." (Past-me has great taste!)
They are so generous and kind that every time I tried to write about them, I got stuck. I thought, "I’ll wait until I’m rich enough to repay them before I write this." But let’s be real—they’re much wealthier than I am. I’d probably need to hit the EuroMillions jackpot just to buy them a thank-you gift they don't already have!
But today was different. I shared something with them I’ve never told (and won’t tell!) anyone else. They showered me with gifts and were so genuinely happy for me. They’ve given me a sense of family here in the UK, even though my own family is far away.
To Joy and her husband:
I don’t know what I did in a past life to deserve meeting you. Since the lottery clearly isn't happening for me, I guess my only way to repay you is to wait until you’re old and become your personal carer!
(Though I won't be young either by then... I just hope I'll still be able to tell if the salmon is actually cooked! 😂😂)
The warmth you’ve given me is worth way more than any jackpot.
