VATS THE PROBLEM!

Hospitality is one of the UK's greatest success stories, employing millions of people, keeping high streets alive and bringing communities together.

But the sector has one of the highest VAT rates in Europe at 20%

From the 1st July, the hospitality industry is coming together to launch "VAT's the Problem", a united sector campaign, calling for hospitality VAT to be reduced from 20% to 10%.

Please can our lovely customers support this campaign and see what we can do to make a positive, fairer change!

The Government says it would be too much of a lose in revenue and the likes of corporate companies would gain even more.

So why not make it a tiered system base the % of VAT on Turnover amount. Have a 10%, 15% and 20%?

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the beautiful work of local North Yorkshire artist, Paula Read, to our tea room.

Paula creates stunning, highly textured 'felted paintings' using sheep wool, alpaca, silk, and intricate hand-stitching. Her incredible pieces are inspired by our gorgeous local countryside and coast.

Ever wonder why independent tea rooms are struggling to survive while global mega-chains keep expanding?

At Bexters Tea Room, we pay 20% VAT, full business rates, and Corporation Tax on our real-world earnings. We can't hide our income.

But look at the latest UK filings submitted to Companies House by the "Big Three" coffee chains. Despite billions in sales, look at what they paid in Corporation Tax:

☕️ Starbucks | Sales: £556.3M | Tax Paid: £0.00
(How? Paid £40m in "royalty fees" to their own offshore parent company to create a paper loss. They actually walked away with a £13.7m tax credit).

☕️ Costa Coffee | Sales: £1.23BN | Tax Paid: £0.00
(How? Shielded by internal parent-company dividend structures. They actually claimed a £2m tax credit).

☕️ Caffè Nero | Sales: £587.6M | Tax Paid: £0.00
(How? Wiped out a £32.3m operating profit using internal debt and borrowing costs).

The Reality:
While these multi-million-pound tax credits sit in corporate pockets to offset future bills, independent venues face over 21 closures every single week across the UK.

A fair, tiered VAT scheme would give local high streets the breathing room to survive, grow, and employ more local people.

The system isn't broken—it's rigged. Support independent businesses before they disappear forever. 🛑👇
