"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Well done Lee and Cameron!

Asda colleagues Lee and Cameron helped to save the life of an elderly customer who had a cardiac arrest and stopped breathing in the car park of our Stockport store.

First-aider Lee, along with two customers, performed CPR on the gentleman, while Cameron ran to get the store's defibrillator. Paramedics said that without the intervention of the colleagues and customers the gentleman may have died. His daughter called in at the store to thank colleagues for their help and to tell them that after time in intensive care in hospital he's since been allowed home and is now on the road to recovery.

Lee is the store's community champion and has worked for Asda for 19 years. He said: "Everything happened so fast, it was very overwhelming. Adrenaline just took over. I'd never had to do anything like that before, or seen anything like that. I found it emotionally draining. I was so relieved to find out that the gentleman was well and back home, which is great news. It was a great team effort. It was just something that needed to be done in the moment and I'm proud of my part in it. Paramedics said the gentleman may not have made it if it wasn't for our help."

Cameron, the store's non food manager, said: "I heard a Tannoy about an incident in the car park so I went to investigate. Someone mentioned that someone was having a heart attack so I went to get the defibrillator and ran to the car park. Lee was amazing doing the CPR and using the defibrillator, as you have to do it right. The gentleman was in great distress. I was so happy when we found out from his daughter that he was now at home and resting."

It was lively to catch up with Paul, the vicar at All Hallows’ Community Church, along with Janet and the rest of the team who support the community with their toddler time.I took a donation of CBeebies activity packs and healthy eating charts and stickers to support the parents and encourage the children to eat healthy. While talking with some of the parents who attended the toddler group I learned just how important the sessions are to the local community who might not otherwise be able to afford other children’s play centres. - Lee, Asa community champion

What an excellent day raising money and awareness for Tickled Pink!

Janet, Linda and I took on the challenge of walking 18 miles from Asda in Stockport to Hyde then Ashton, then Eastlands and finally back to Stockport.

It took us eight hours and we have raised over £600 in sponsorship. We've grateful to have received so much support from colleagues, customers and the general public during this event. We really do feel Tickled Pink! – Lee, Asda community champion

It was wonderful to see Mike from Wellbeing Football and Sports when he came in store to collect a donation.

I got the opportunity to surprise him with an grassroots hero award and a box of chocolates to celebrate his outstanding contribution to our community and the underprivileged children he supports with sporting activities.

We had a fantastic clean up in sunny Stockport, with help from Greenspace volunteers led by Chris, James from Stockport council's Green Party, the volunteers from NIQ based in Stockport and myself and Laura from our Reddish store.

We collected 23 bags of litter from Reddish vale, Tiviot Way and Portwood roundabout. That's the spring clean done – now we’re summer ready! Well done to everyone who took part.
