Phoenix City started in 1986. We opened our first restaurant above Clarendon Square in Hyde. In those days, authentic Chinese cuisine outside of Chinatown wasn’t that commonplace and there certainly weren’t that many Chinese restaurants hosting dinner-dance evenings. Our two boys used to play with some of our customers’ children, and when they had exhausted their energy and needed a nap, we would lay them down on chairs and tuck them under the tables while we worked.

In 1991, our daughter was born and so was Phoenix City on Radcliffe Street in Royton. Here, our function room and infamous Christmas party nights forged some truly unforgettable moments among our customers and staff alike. It really felt like we were all one big family.

Then our journey led us back to Tameside in 2003, which is when we built Phoenix City on Castle Street in Stalybridge. Here, we wanted to continue our authentic Chinese cuisine offering while trying to expand our function room business. All three of our kids helped out and learnt the fundamentals of working hard and treating people with respect.

Fast forward 21 years (38 years, if we start from the Hyde days), and our children are all grown up with young kids of their own. Becoming grandparents has been the final deciding factor for us to retire and spend quality time with the family.

This is one of those bittersweet moments. Phoenix City has officially closed its doors🥲

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our family and all our staff for their hard work and help over the years. We couldn’t have done it without them. Hopefully we have taught them to work hard, and to play hard🥰

Another special mention to all our suppliers, collaborators, and other associates. There are too many to list but you have all been wonderful to work with🤝

Finally, words cannot express our gratitude towards all of our customers. Like Tina Turner said, “You’re simply the best!” If you’re still reading, then yes, that’s you🫵
