Why are so many restaurants closing?

Every month another restaurant closes its doors. Most people see an empty building. I see someone's dream ending. When COVID hit, restaurants were forced to close for months. We survived by launching a takeaway service, hoping that once restrictions ended, life would return to normal. It didn't.

Customers still came, but many could only afford to eat out less often with the cost of living. At the very same time, our costs soared. A 10kg box of chicken rose from £32 to £50. Our food bill increased by around £1,000 every month. Our energy bills rose by another £2,000 per month. Since then we've also faced increases in wages, National Insurance and many other costs.

Restaurants can't keep absorbing these increases forever, yet we know families are struggling too.
When a restaurant closes, it isn't just a business that disappears. It's local jobs. It's local suppliers. It's birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations.
Independent restaurants are part of the community.

That's why the hospitality industry is calling on the Government to reduce VAT and provide meaningful support before even more businesses disappear.
If you value your local restaurants, cafés and pubs, please support them while they're still here. Eat local.
Order a takeaway. Leave a review. Recommend them to a friend.

These small acts make a bigger difference than you might realise. Because once an independent restaurant closes, it's rarely just a meal that's lost. It's a piece of the community.
