The Three Hats was built during the reign of King Henry VIII in 1503. It remained unchanged until the reign of George III in the 18th century. Built as a dwelling house by Thomas Elliott, he wanted to use it as a lodging house but in 1512 sold it. It wasn’t until 1539 that it became a licensed premises owned by the very first landlord Silas Hazledene, although in those days he was simply known as

an ale keeper and the pub known as an Ale House. After he died his widow sold the premises. It was not then licensed to sell ale again until it was purchased by Thomas Snoad, a marine chandler, in 1612. When he died in 1646, he bequeathed the property to his son, Michael, and the records show this included a brew house. In 1660 Michael Snoad was granted a license to sell wines and it was this time that the name “The Three Hats” was attributed to the property. The name derived from three cavaliers who dined there at the time of the restoration of the throne to King Charles II. The original pub sign was of three cavalier hats to mark this. During the years that followed the pub changed hands many times and in 1678 it was bought by a surgeon and apothecary, Thomas Ray, who, as well as running the pub also used the building as a doctors surgery. He later acquired the adjoining property and incorporated that into the inn. This double use of the building continued for more than one hundred years with no less than six surgeons selling ales and wine and operating a surgery. Two signs could be seen outside the inn, one showing the three hats of the cavaliers and the other with the owner's name and 'surgeon and apothecary' inscribed thereon. In 1873 the then owner, Richard Bates , put in a living tenant, George Clatworthy, at a yearly rent of 22 pounds (if only!!!!). From then on the “Three Hats” had a succession of landlords and some years ago was purchased by the Courage Brewery, then unique pub properties, who were bought by Enterprise Inns. Today the Three Hats is held on a fifteen-year lease by the current hosts Caoibhe & Malcolm Winskill - licences since 2002.
