Quality over quantity…

If you’re looking for a gelato shop that does enormous portions for a small price than that is not us. And if you find anywhere that does, then you really should be questioning what ingredients are being used.

We pride ourselves on the fact that we use premium ingredients. With all of our ingredients coming from Italy except: the salt which we source from our neighbouring shop Ganesha and the milk and cream from local farmers.

For example the Cherries in the Black Cherry Gelato come from Bologna! We have always been so adamant on using quality ingredients.

Not to mention the fact that every gelato is handmade by one person in the summer, our gelato chef, Thomas.

With over a decade of experience although he may be very qualified, every gelato still takes time to make.

In fact to make one single pan of gelato takes Thomas over 10 minutes. If you know us, then you know how many pans of gelato we sell, so imagine the time it takes Thomas to keep us well stocked up!

A lot of people may be looking for much bigger portions and a much smaller price but how could we ever be a premium product if we did that?

Like I’ve said previously we’ve invested all this money into Sidmouth by redecorating our shop to reflect the quality of the gelato!

It’s so hard sometimes that people want us to compete with main stream ice cream which is manufactured in such huge quantities with their main ingredients being air and essence, not actual flavourings, essence.

We just can’t compete and what we’re really trying to focus on is the quality, care and effort that is put into every single one of our gelatos!

We have been approached by companies such as Waitrose but we declined. To make our gelato on such a large scale and at a competitive retail rate, something would have to give and we’re not willing to do that!

There’s a reason we only have one shop, quality and control. We want to keep control of the quality, we won’t ever compromise!

Maybe one day we’ll open another shop because I know you all are so desperate for us to which we love! But not until we can figure out a plan of how we can keep the quality and upscale.

This is a bit of a random post but because you all reacted so positively and were so understanding of my last post about pricing and new staff I wanted to explain further!

So many people patiently wait outside with their dogs but they are SO welcome to come inside!

When redecorating the new shop we did it with the intention of dogs being able to come in 🥰

Yes, our prices have gone up.

I’m going to be completely honest with you all (as I always am) we’re battling a lot…

The main thing being competing with main stream ice cream. What we mean by this is mass produced ice cream that other shops buy in, for a fraction of the price it costs us to make it.

We’ve always been about keeping things reasonable.

Before owning Taste my mum, a single parent, worked 4 jobs to support my brother and I. So we totally understand what it’s like and how important it is to look after your customers, be reasonably priced and not feel ripped off. As a family we would go to the beach and our special treat and reward for helping carry everything down would be going to get an ice cream.

We want to look after you all.

As you know every single gelato is handmade by my brother Thomas, this takes a lot of skill, effort and time. Our ingredients are very good quality with all the flavouring coming from Italy- we don’t scrimp at all!

So yes, we have increased our prices, not to make more money out of you but simply to cover the increased cost of everything involved. It really is a good quality product.

I would also like to mention we have so many new lovely staff joining us this time of year and throughout summer and sometimes they don’t get the portion size quite right- it’s all a learning curve! So please please do let us know if you’re not happy with the portion. I would NEVER want anyone to leave feeling disappointed or upset!

The support and how busy we are is absolutely amazing and we are so grateful!

At times though, I must admit, I’m completely overwhelmed and I don’t see every single gelato leaving the shop and I promise if you were unhappy and let me know I would absolutely rectify it.

My mum has worked so hard to get us where we are now and create the business she has but I do remember what it’s like to be a customer and even more so I remeber what it feels like to be conscious of what you’re spending your money on and wanting to feel like it’s good value for money.

Maybe I’m over sharing but I feel like we have this relationship here at Taste where I’m always honest and transparent with you all!

We really value you all and therefore I hope you all understand and never hesitate to talk to me at the time!

I see every single one of your comments, reviews and messages- in fact I probably check them an unhealthy amount but you have no idea how much it means to us all at Taste and as a family seeing how lovely, kind, excited and supportive you all are!

Oh we’re so touched… 🥹

You’re keeping us so busy and it makes me feel very emotional!

Our small independent, family run business with all these lovely customer, I’m so proud 🥲

On Sunday I started a bit later and by the time I came in we already had a queue and with at least 8 people serving, I really thought, wow!

What a business my mum has created.

I even walked from the very end of the beach to film a “how to get to us” video and I followed this group of people all the way from the end of the promenade to Taste!
