Felt very fortunate to be picking up some absolutely glorious chicories today from James straight from his patch.

He's been growing some absolutely fantastic bitter greens that are impossible to get anywhere else near us.
The beauty of small scale food networks, now going straight onto this week's super club menu!

Without growers like James , Jon and Nick , Emma and her tean the availability and access to locally grown, nutritious and diverse food is near to impossible.
Using, supporting and celebrating these guys through our menus by passing their produce on to you is so paramount to us. It's what brings all the pleasure and purpose to this industry.

First up in Becky's shop - TROMBOCINO

What’s a trombocino we hear you cry? Though it sounds like a member of a brass section, it is in-fact an heirloom Italian squash. This year we tried growing a few plants in Polly (or communal polytunnel with Tom Lucy Otto and Rafi and and ) where they climbed up and up and around the inside structure, happily fruiting pale-green, serpentine squashes, which twisted and curled into strange and wonderful shapes. Young trombocino are delicious eaten raw, grated or thinly sliced into salads or used as you would courgettes as they mature.

This summer, our Italian friend Ida , shared a delicious jar of homemade ‘agrodolche’ pickled courgette. We loved them so much, we thought we’d try making them with our bounty of trombocino…and we were pretty delighted with the results. Cl

Come and get your hands on a jar if you fancy trying them… but you better be quick, they’re slithering away.

ITALIAN SUPPER - Thursday 7th December

For our final supper club of the season, Sarah, Aitana, Maia and I have decided to travel to a country where seasonal produce at this time of year is particularly well espoused, Italy.

Italian food seems oh so familiar, yet with this special supper, we shall seek out its less well trodden dishes. Think, a steaming market stall holder’s breakfast at the crack of dawn in Florence, cucina povera with a worker’s lunch in a small cantina on a backstreet in Genova or a bite from blood orange oozing with juice at the foot of Mount Etna.

It’s a cuisine that all four of us are particularly fond of, having travelled around its historic sites, bustling markets and citrus groves many times, searching for local delicacies at every corner.

Through these dinners, we aim to open the doors to The Straw Kitchen to you at night, welcoming you around large communal tables, to feast on food that truly excites us, using produce from our kitchen garden and our local suppliers.

This time, we particularly want to showcase one of our favourite local producers, Granary Oils who grow English walnuts on our doorstep in Burmington.

Tickets are £40, and in line with our end of season tradition, £5 from every ticket will be donated to a charity dear to our hearts, Refugee Community Kitchen, who provide vital meals to displaced people in the UK and France.

We hope you can join us, Sarah, Aitana, Becky, Tina and Rosie for this one.
And as the Italians have it, tutto finisce a tarallucci e vino!

To book tickets, send us a DM, email [email protected] or come and get your tickets direct from us. Don’t forget, cash is king!

Con un sacco di baci,

Christine, Sarah, Maia, Aitana

If you’ve been to the cafe lately, you might have noticed that our Becky has an even bigger spring in her step than usual.

That’s because it’s Becky’s (AKA Mrs Shopkeeper) favourite time of the year, when the Straw Kitchen shop is open for business.

In the last months, we’ve been pickling, preserving, drying and fermenting our homegrown and locally foraged produce, into delectable delights for you to take home.

Over the next weeks, we’ll be sharing some of the stories behind the produce.
Stay tuned....!
