A difficult announcement to make from Penny & Stace 🤍
After just over 24 years, we have made the incredibly difficult and heartbreaking decision to close the business.
When Mum, Penny, first decided to buy the business, she was advised not to do it. But, she took the leap, worked incredibly hard and turned it into a successful little coffee shop that has been part of the local community for more than two decades.
Last January, Mum handed the reins over to me (Stacey) so that she could finally retire. She moved to the East Coast in December, and the plan was for me to eventually take over the business completely and continue what she had built.
Sadly, things haven’t worked out as we had hoped.
For the last two years, we have been trying to secure a new lease with the property owner. Despite our efforts and constant attempts, we have been unable to do so. Without a lease in place, the business cannot be formally signed over to me, meaning Mum remains financially involved in the business despite having retired.
This has left us in an impossible position. Then on top of that, the landlord has decided to put the building on the market, leaving us in limbo as we don’t know if the property is being sold as a going concern.
The hardest part is that the business itself is doing well. We have a wonderful team of five staff who genuinely love their jobs, and we have a loyal customer base who have supported us throughout the years. This isn’t a closure because the business has failed — quite the opposite.
It is incredibly heartbreaking to have to walk away from something that is still thriving and that we all love.
Thank you to every single customer who has supported Penny’s over the past 24 years. Thank you for every cup of coffee, every lunch, every cake, every catering order, every conversation and every kind word. You have helped make this place what it is.
And a huge thank you to our amazing team, who have given so much to the business and who deserve every bit of recognition.
This isn’t how we wanted the story to end, but we will always be incredibly proud of what Mum built — and of the little piece of the community that we have been lucky enough to be part of for the last 24 years.
Our last day will be Wednesday 30th September. We may have to bring this forward depending on stock, but we will keep you all updated.
Thank you for reading 🤍
