Sad news reel I’m afraid but better coming from me than rumours which will no doubt be going round soon 🥲x
It’s time I explained the pending situation at Henry’s Café
After a lot of soul searching and thinking about the future of Henry’s not only for myself, but for my brilliant staff and our loyal, supportive customers, who i am eternally grateful to. I’ve made the difficult decision not to tender for the café on this occasion.
For 19 incredible years, we’ve shared fun, laughter, and joy serving our customers. Most of the time, it has felt more like family than work. We care deeply about everyone who has walked through our doors, and I hope that has shown throughout our time at Henry’s.
Times in the hospitality industry are extremely difficult, the hardest I’ve ever known. Although we may look busy at times, it has become harder and harder to maintain the spirit and ethos of the café without significantly increasing prices and changing what makes Henry’s special.
We’ve never wanted to be like most other park cafés. We’ve always tried to keep prices fair so everyone feels welcome, even if it’s just for a cuppa and a chat. Especially for those who may feel isolated, I know many lifelong friendships have been formed here over the years, and that means the world to us.
Unfortunately, the council has decided the café should go out to tender in order to improve income and bring it more in line with other park cafés, which is understandable. They have kindly kept us on an “at will” basis for the last few years at my request, as I previously wasn’t in a position to commit to a long-term agreement.
So, the café will soon go out to tender, and new operators may take over towards the end of the summer.
My hope had been to celebrate 20 years at Henry’s before making a decision about my future to leave with a celebration and the blessing of our customers, knowing I’d done my time and could pass it on to someone who would continue it in the same spirit. Sadly, that may or may not happen now, depending on what comes next.
I want to make it very clear that I hold no bad feelings. I truly want the café to continue to succeed and remain a place for everyone to enjoy, just as it has been over the years. I wish the new operators every success and happiness in their venture.
So, it is with deep sadness that I share this news. But we will make the most of the summer, however long we have left and we will celebrate this era properly with a party for the café, the staff, the customers, and the future of Henry’s in Firth Park for many years to come.
Thank you all for your love and support over the last 19 years. It has meant more than you will ever know ❤️
We will still be here for the next few months so please continue to support us we really do appreciate the love xx
