Another publican. Another set of jobs lost. Another community asset pushed to the brink.
Reading posts like this is heartbreaking.
Behind every pub closure is a landlord or landlady who has poured everything they have into their business, staff who suddenly find themselves without work, suppliers who lose a customer, and a community that loses part of its social fabric.
The saddest part is that this isn’t a story about a pub that was empty. It isn’t a story about a publican who didn’t care. It’s a story about a business that was trading, serving customers and doing everything it could to survive, but was ultimately overwhelmed by soaring costs.
This is exactly the kind of situation the Independent Pub Alliance was created to fight against.
We are working tirelessly to campaign for meaningful change, including:
🍺 A reduction in hospitality VAT
🏢 Fairer business rates
⚡ Action on crippling energy costs
📜 A fairer deal for tied tenants
🤝 Proper recognition of pubs as vital community assets
No landlord should have to sit their team down and tell them their jobs are ending because the numbers simply no longer add up.
To the publican who wrote this: we may not know your name, but we know your story far too well. You have our sympathy, our respect, and our gratitude for trying.
And to those in Government who continue to underestimate the scale of this crisis, please understand that behind every closure statistic is a real person having one of the worst weeks of their life.
This has to stop.
