🚙 What does the “L” really mean?

When you see an L plate on the back of a car, most people know what it means:

Learner.

It tells you that the person behind the wheel is still learning.

They’re gaining experience, building confidence and working towards becoming a safe, independent driver.

So, if you see an L plate ahead of you, please give them time, space, patience and courtesy. ❤️

But maybe that little L means so much more than “Learner”.

It could mean…

🛟 “L”IFELINE

For some learners, passing their test and becoming road-ready could genuinely change their life.

It could mean being able to get to work, attend appointments, take children to school, or drive loved ones where they need to be.

Their licence may be the difference between independence and relying on others.

⏰ “L”EFT IT TOO LATE

The learner in front of you might feel like they’ve left learning until later in life.

They could be carrying every negative emotion imaginable — embarrassment, frustration, anxiety, self-doubt or regret.

They may have spent years telling themselves:

“I should have done this sooner.”

💪 “L”EARNING

They are learning.

They will make mistakes.

They may hesitate at a junction, stall, take a little longer to make a decision or get flustered when you’re close behind them.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re unsafe.

It means they’re still learning.

🌱 “L”IVING

Behind that windscreen is a real person with a real reason for being there.

Maybe they’re learning because they want freedom.

Maybe they’re doing it for their family.

Maybe they’re rebuilding their confidence.

Maybe they’re proving something to themselves.

Maybe getting that licence means more to them than you’ll ever know.

❤️ “L”OVED ONE

The learner in front of you could be your loved one.

Your son.
Your daughter.
Your brother.
Your sister.
Your partner.
Your grandchild.
Your friend.

Someone you love could be sitting in that driver’s seat, trying their best to learn something that may be completely new and incredibly challenging for them.

So before getting frustrated, remember how you’d want other drivers to treat your loved one.

So next time you see an L plate, remember:

You don’t know what that “L” means to the person sitting behind the wheel.

You only know they’re learning.

So give them a little more space.
Give them a little more time.
Be patient.
Be courteous.

Because that learner may not just be learning to drive.

They may be learning to live a life with opportunities they haven’t had before. ❤️

🚗 L doesn’t just mean Learner.

And sometimes, all that learner needs from you is a little patience.

Because one day, that L plate could be on the back of a car being driven by someone you love. ❤️

If all else fails and you still find yourself beeping, flashing your lights, revving and waving your hands like some subject matter expert, ask yourself how much YOU value YOUR licence and that the Dash Camera is running and my current positive action quota with Operation Snap is 100%

Be patient when you see an “L” and drive safe 🚙

Congratulations to Jack on a first time, 2 fault pass today in Walton.

I can’t say enough good things about Jack.

Mild mannered, considerate and such a hard worker Jack has spent a mere 17 hours worth of professional lessons with me.

Jack’s parents kicked it all off before lesson 1, meaning that my job was just to tidy it all up and make sure Jack was road ready ahead of test day.

Keeping it interesting, the day before test, Jack flipped the script by opting to do the practical in his own car…thankfully he’s cool enough to drive a fiesta, so no drama’s there.

I love test day, love being part of the journey and sharing even a small part of finding success on the main day is a feeling I hope never goes away for me and to be privy to the post test conversation between Jack and his Dad gives me a reminder why we do this.

Thank you Jack for turning up every time, bringing maximum effort and for blitzing it.

A proud day all around for Jack, his lovely family and for me.

Good on ya Brad!!

What does it take to pass the practical? Hard work, determination and commitment.

Young Dad Brad is the picture of all these things. Add a supporting family and his mates pushing him on and you find the perfect combination of what it takes.

It also takes a team to make it work! Brad should have done his test a few weeks ago but it was cancelled…cue the legends at Oh Savvy II in helping us find an earlier test and here we are 😊 in addition to that, Alison Copsey Driving Instructor Selby with a mock test putting Brad on track for success.

Petrol head Brad is a top young man, from hopping down the motorway to new training areas around Castleford and paying more attention to the “Modded Cars” to driving to test today getting distracted by the Land Rover event near the outlet (another reason I drive to York on test day).

Even with all these distraction, Brad managed to take it all on board on lessons which earned him the first time ZERO FAULT pass in a busy York this afternoon.

Get out in your car with your lovely family, go steady and enjoy it all. It’s been a pleasure Brad, thank you 🚙

Yes Kate!!

When you’re the daughter of your driving instructor there is clearly zero extra pressure to pass first time with less faults than what your older sister did 2 years ago……. Thankfully Kate only went and did it at the first try with just 2 faults, putting her firmly back in number one spot as favourite daughter 😄

Now obviously all the cool kids drive Fiesta’s which explains why Kate went to test this morning in her own car. Forgiving her for this huge error and leaving the “fezzy bomber” to have a sleep in we set off confidently to York.

Now I love test day. It’s the end of a journey and a chance to show you can be fully independent so I’m never a nervous instructor/Dad. Learners are rightly and obviously nervous as its a big day but when the Senior Driving Examiner, who tests and licences us as instructors, walks out to carry out the test (obviously Kate had no idea of this at the time) all Kate’s nerves quickly leave her and sit solely with me 🫣

Kate gave a really solid example of herself today leaving both me and her Mum, who also was part of the learning journey, so very proud. Well done Kate, we are all very happy for you. Go and enjoy it 🚙🚗

Success for Match ready Matilda today in York.

Tilly being a football referee knows how to handle the pressure and an unruly bunch on a warm away York fixture this morning.

First time pass with only a single driver fault meaning she came so close to the clean sheet but, when the final whistle blew a yellow card and the win was enough for us all.

It certainly wasn’t a game of 2 halves with superb feedback from the examiner with Tilly calmly running a commentary drive for the test talking her thoughts through putting the examiner totally at ease!

12 lessons ago Tilly was an amateur but she’s now turned Pro and has got the licence to prove it.

Come on Tilly (and England…obvs)

Go and enjoy it 🚙

Yes Lexi!!

First time pass alert with 3 faults and solid feedback rounded it off today for this young lady. Always with a story to tell when she got in car.

32 degreee heat, mid day test, broken A/C in car…not a problem for Lexi.

Breezed through it and even managed to wind everyone up telling them she’d failed while still having a laugh at the same time.

We’ve had “learner VS learner” car parking challenge with some sketchy drone footage (we definitely won 😊), laughs, tears, doubts and moments of realising she can do it all along the way.

Go enjoy it Lexi, stay safe and give me a beep and a wave 🚙

Selby’s latest full licence holder is Bethan.

Success this morning in Walton for Bethan who passed with a single driver fault.

Bethan had input with another instructor before linking up with me at the end of March. The skills were there, so it was more confidence building and letting the foundations develop into what is a good overall drive.

New job, full licence all in one week so who knows what’s next for this young lady.

Thanks Bethan for letting me help get you over the line. Enjoy it, stay safe and give me a wave 🚙

As lovely as it is when learners buy me a gift after passing their test, I don’t usually post about it because I never want anyone to feel like they need to — you absolutely don’t!

However, when something like this turns up at your door, there’s only one thing you can do…

Thank you, Liv. I absolutely loved our lessons, but it turns out you’re the gift that keeps on giving! 😊🎁
