Stewart Wilson, aka , was on ITV Borders yesterday, chatting with journalist Clare McNeill from the shadow of Melrose Abbey. Stewart was talking about the fantastic news that St Cuthbert’s Way has been recognised by Lonely Planet as a must-do experience for 2027.

And the timing couldn’t be better…

Stewart will be back in Melrose this Sunday for our very first Melrose Heritage Walk, starting and finishing here at Haus and Co. He’ll be sharing the stories, history and fascinating facts behind Melrose Abbey, St Cuthbert and plenty more — bringing the town’s history to life along the way.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND OUR AUTUMN EVENTS AND WORKSHOP PROGRAMME

Meet Becky Jones, aka The Thready Flock, the talented textile artist behind our upcoming Textile Bird Workshop at on 17 October.

With a lifelong love of birds, Becky draws inspiration from the wildlife of the Tweed Valley, where she is based. Growing up in the North-West Highlands, the outdoors and wildlife were a huge part of her childhood — and they continue to inspire her work today.

Becky’s beautiful birds begin life as fabric collages. Carefully chosen colours and patterns are used to capture the tonal variations and direction of feathers, before she uses her sewing machine to ‘paint’ over the fabric with free-machine embroidery.

Layer by layer, the stitching brings out the details, texture and character of each bird — even giving each one its own personality.

And Becky’s work has already had its moment on screen too. In 2017, she appeared on Channel 4’s Kirsty’s Handmade Christmas, winning the Christmas stocking competition.

Now, we’re delighted to welcome Becky to on 17 October for a hands-on Textile Bird Workshop, where you can explore her unique approach to fabric collage and be able to create your own textile bird artwork.

DECEMBER POP-UP MARKETS | CALLING LOCAL MAKERS & BUSINESSES

We’re now taking notes of interest from local artists, makers and independent businesses to join us for our new December Saturday pop-up markets at and , Melrose.

📍 Haus & Co, Melrose�📅 Saturdays 5th, 12th & 19th December�⏰ 9am–4pm�💷 £50 per table, per day

We’re looking to curate a considered mix of independent brands and makers whose products and aesthetic complement the Haus & Co feel — think beautifully made, design-led, considered and distinctive pieces that would sit naturally within our space.

We’d love to hear from people offering art, ceramics, homewares, jewellery, fashion, textiles, gifts, prints, handmade goods and other thoughtfully made products.
When applying, please send us:

• A short introduction to you/ your business and what you make/sell�• Your Instagram and/or website�• A selection of product images �• An image of your current market/stall set-up, if you have them�• Which date(s) you would like to attend — 5th, 12th and/or 19th December�• Any relevant practical requirements, such as access to electricity�
Places will be carefully selected to create a strong and varied collection of makers and brands, so please make sure your application gives us a good sense of your products and overall aesthetic.

Applications close 30th September. But may be allocated early as applications come in so don’t wait until the deadline.

MEET THE MAKER | HELEN FROM DOOK

Next up in our series introducing the people and makers behind and is Helen Atherton, founder of Dook — an Edinburgh-based, award-winning skincare brand making beautiful, small-batch bath and body products - and an absolute favourite of ours and our customers.

Helen started Dook in 2018 after years of making traditional cold-processed soap. Then came a happy accident: she added salt to one of her recipes and discovered something rather special. The salt transformed the colour and texture, enhanced the essential oil scents and created a firm, long-lasting bar.
And so Dook was born.

Named after the old Scots word dook — meaning to dip, plunge or bathe — the brand is rooted in Helen’s life by the sea in Portobello, Edinburgh and her love of thoughtful, beautifully made everyday rituals.

Today, Dook creates its products by hand in small batches, using natural ingredients, essential oils and minimal plastic. And the work has certainly been noticed. Dook has picked up a string of awards, including Best Artisan Eco Soap Brand and Best Plastic-Free Packaging, alongside accolades for individual products. In 2025, Dook’s bath salts were also recognised by the Beauty Shortlist Awards, with the Lavender, Mandarin, Coriander & Cedar Bath Salts taking Best Bath Salts.

So with that in mind we’re delighted to welcome Helen to Haus & Co Melrose on 24 October for a very special bath salt-making workshop.

You’ll get to spend time with Helen, learn more about the ingredients and craft behind Dook’s products, and get hands-on creating your own bath salts — blending beautiful salts and essential oils to make something entirely your own.

A chance to slow down, get creative and learn from a maker who has turned a simple bathroom ritual into an award-winning Scottish brand.

We’re kicking off a new series introducing some of the brilliant people who will be bringing Haus Below to life through events, workshops, talks and experiences.

First up… Stewart Wilson — aka the Tweed Valley Blogger.

If you’ve ever wondered about the stories hiding in plain sight around the Scottish Borders, Stewart is your man. A lifelong Borders resident, professional tour guide, writer and self-confessed lover of a good local story, Stewart has a brilliant knack for bringing places, people and history to life. His passion is sharing the richness of the Borders — not just the famous landmarks, but the characters, curious details and hidden stories that make the area what it is.

And we’re delighted that Stewart is joining us for two very special Melrose Heritage Walks this autumn.

Starting and finishing at Haus & Co, Melrose, Stewart will take you on a journey through the town, uncovering some of its fascinating history and stories along the way. Expect plenty of interesting characters, surprising snippets, local history and those little details that you probably walk past every day without knowing the story behind them.

And because every good Haus experience should involve coffee… Your ticket includes a FREE Haus coffee of your choice to enjoy at the start or finish of your walk. It’s a chance to discover Melrose from a different perspective, learn a little more about the place we’re lucky enough to call home, and spend a few hours with one of the Borders’ most enthusiastic storytellers.
