While Emily conjured Wuthering Heights from the windswept hills above Haworth, it was her sister Anne who found her peace by the sea. Anne — author of Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall — spent her final days breathing in the restorative sea air of the Yorkshire coast. She loved it so deeply that she asked to be brought here at the end.

She is buried at St Mary's Church, Scarborough, in a quiet churchyard overlooking the very bay she adored. One of the most quietly moving places in all of England.

From Wrea Head Hall, you are perfectly placed to walk in her footsteps. A short drive brings you to the church, the coast, the bay she never forgot. And each evening you return to the warmth and elegance of a Victorian country house — a setting as atmospheric and romantic as any page she ever wrote.
