OK SO HERE WE GO

5 weeks ago I made the decision at 4.30 in the morning to shut The Red Pig down and move on to the next adventure.

Leaving aside the unforeseen Bowel Cancer business here we go.
There are some truly amazing things that have happened to me in my life, the first was meeting Sharon and all the love and joy she brings with her, and the second was the day having smoked for 37 years I stopped smoking.

6 months ago I sat down to write a book to share that joy (not the one about Sharon, you’ll have to find your own amazing wife, mother and cake maker) but with my fellow smokers, va**rs and snussers.

So here it is…

I found it really easy to stop smoking when I stopped trying to give it up, so here is how I did it.

A LESSON IN IRONY

On the 17th of April I got out of bed at 4.30 a.m. and started to write.

I love the sounds of the rising sun.

Having worked for two hours I lent myself to the tasks of the day and allowed my pen to write a list.

On the list some new challenges: challenges I'd not expected.

Later that day, when Sharon got home from work we talked about our days and I said to Sharon I think it's time to sell the Pig.

She asked why and I said because it's the right time to start some new adventures, and we decided there and then to end that episode in our lives and move on to the next.

The rest or some of the rest you know.

We closed the Pig.

5 days later I had acrylic nails fitted to my right hand so I could devote some time to learning Flamenco Guitar and I set to work on the new projects.

16 days later I got a phone call from my hospital informing me that my annual bowel cancer screening test had thrown up some anomalies and that I needed to get various test done, with some degree of urgency.

Most of those tests now complete, they told me I have bowel cancer and they will be operating in about 3 to 4 weeks time.

I tell you this not to gain your sympathy or to promote my new book (I'll do that later) but to get you to understand that it is important to do what you know you need to do when you need to do it.

Guys, do what you need to do when you need to do it.

Don't wait until tomorrow to be the person you should be, have the courage to be it now.

Do the right thing.

As to how you respond when next we meet?

You could ask... Andy how's the arse situation going? or you could not. Don't feel the need to ask or the need not to ask: there will be good days and bad days ahead as there would be whether I had cancer or not.

Do with today what you can with today.

Live it out, love it, be kind to other people and to yourself.

We're closing the pig with immediate effect.

Ok, we have some of our staffing sorted out but not all of it, we are still looking for one more player, ideally a student, but surprise us if you want to.

The job is one day a weekend and we try to open most of the year. Would suit a student wanting to go to college or a Mum who wants to get out of the house at the weekend for a break.

We are very exam conscious and push all our staff to achieve their best.

We'll teach you soft skills that will last you a life time: you'll earn good money working with us and even more when you move on to your next employer. We'll teach you how to listen to and talk to people.
