Running for Lilford Ward Staff: The Biggest Challenge of My Life
In April 2027, at the age of 47, I'll be standing on the start line of the London Marathon.
To be completely honest, this is probably the biggest challenge I have ever undertaken. I'm not a natural runner. I certainly won't be breaking any records, and there will no doubt be plenty of difficult training runs between now and then. But while I wouldn't call myself a runner, I do sort of like running, and when the opportunity to enter the marathon came along, I entered the ballot in a moment of madness...and my number came out!
Sometimes, though, things happen for a reason.
Ten years ago, my dad was diagnosed with lymphoma. Thanks to his incredible determination and the outstanding care he received from the team at Kettering General Hospital, particularly the amazing staff on Lilford Ward, we were given something priceless: another ten years with him.
Those ten years gave us more memories, more family celebrations, more laughter and more time together than we ever thought we might have.
Sadly, in August 2026, Dad became seriously ill again. The lymphoma had spread to several major organs and, despite the best efforts of the medical team, there were no further treatment options available.
Once again, the staff on Lilford Ward were extraordinary.
Not only did they provide Dad with exceptional care and dignity during his final days, but they also cared for the people who loved him. They welcomed my mum, my sister and me, making sure we were looked after, fed, watered and supported through some of the hardest days of our lives. Their compassion, kindness and humanity will stay with us forever.
I will never be able to repay what they did for our family.
What I can do is try.
That's why I have decided to take on the London Marathon and raise money for Lilford Ward. My family and I would love to make a donation that helps the ward continue supporting patients and families facing some of life's most difficult moments. If our fundraising can help even one family receive the same care, support and precious extra time that we were given, then every mile will be worth it.
My marathon journey won't be easy. It won't always be pretty. There will almost certainly be moments when I question what I've signed up for! But I am determined to reach that finish line, just as the staff on Lilford Ward are determined every day to provide the very best care for their patients and families.
If you are able to donate, no matter how small the amount, it will be hugely appreciated. Every penny raised will go towards supporting the incredible work of Lilford Ward and the people who find themselves needing its care.
