⚠️ BUSINESS ALERT: Professional "Short-Change" Scam Active in Ruddington
Local businesses, retail staff, and hospitality workers are urged to remain vigilant following a professional "short-change" distraction theft at New China City on Monday evening at approximately 6:30 PM.
The suspects successfully utilized highly coordinated sleight-of-hand techniques to steal cash directly during the transaction.
📋 Incident Breakdown:
The Setup: Two male individuals entered the premises and placed an unusual, bulk order (10 portions of a single dish), initially pretending to speak very little English to create a barrier and cause minor confusion.
The Distraction: The individuals short-paid the total bill. When the staff member correctly pointed out the shortage, the suspects requested the cash back to "re-count" it themselves.
The Theft: While counting the notes openly in front of the staff member, the suspects professionally palmed and pocketed a £20 note from the stack, topped up the remaining cash with a smaller note, and handed it back.
The Cancellation: Immediately after the cash exchange, the suspects suddenly spoke clear English, claimed the order was too expensive, demanded a full refund of their money, and left the premises.
A subsequent review of CCTV footage confirmed the theft occurred during the suspects' re-count. Both individuals wore hats and intentionally kept their heads tilted downward to avoid clear facial identification on camera.
🛑 Crucial Prevention Advice for Retail & Hospitality Staff:
Maintain Control of Cash: Never hand money back to a customer to "re-count" or check. If cash leaves your hand for any reason, you must completely recount the entire stack yourself from scratch before finalizing the transaction or opening the till.
Be Wary of Immediate Cancellations: A sudden request for a full refund immediately following a complex or confusing cash exchange is a major red flag for distraction theft.
Control the Pace: Scammers rely on creating artificial urgency, confusion, or language barriers to pressure staff into lowering their guard. If an interaction feels unusual, slow the transaction down and verify every step.
