LATEST UPDATE! I honestly can’t thank you all enough. Because of your input as a community over 90 emails have been sent to Herefordshire Council. From this we secured an onsite meeting for which I had been trying to get since early 2025.

The result from the meeting is that the closure and demolition notice has been revoked, we have now have route forward!
We’re excited to move forward even though it feels like we’re paying to monitor HC’s pollution.

- Next steps: A specialist team will be onsite for 3–4 days to monitor ground gases that might be escaping from the Council’s landfill. If nothing is found we submit the results to show their pollution isn’t there at all, and that box is ticked.

If something is detected: we’ll need to bore under the café and install venting pipes to safely release any gases. Not ideal, but hope we can all agree its way more positive than losing the café.

Thank you again to every single person local business and more who emailed, the council without you we would be in a world of stress..you made this happen!
Finally another huge shout-out to the Ross Town Councillors — especially Danny Lister, Milly Boylan, and Katie Fowler Ed Driscoll for going above and beyond throughout this whole situation. We’re so grateful for you all. We’ll keep everyone updated as things progress. 🙏

Council’s own pollution map shows significant contamination within the inner circle and possible pollution in the outer circle — confirmed by Joshua Evans over the phone. When asked for a scale or legend, none could be provided.”

HEREFORDSHIRE COUNCIL WANT TO DEMOLISH THE RIVERSIDE CAFÉ.

Last Friday, we were told that Herefordshire Council intend to stop the Riverside Café from trading and demolish the building. If carried out this will instantly destroy 16 local jobs, cut off our local suppliers, and put the future of the Riverside Restaurant & Bar at serious risk. We rely on both working together to survive.

It’s heartbreaking. This site was abandoned for 16 years, used by squatters, drug producers, and worse. We restored it, cleaned it, and created something positive.

We followed every instruction from the Council including a full desk study with soil samples but the enforcement officer has withheld vital information and failed to pass on key emails, including one sent on 22nd July asking for more details to complete Condition 4. Then they failed us for “lack of information.”

The landfill that supposedly “pollutes” our site was owned and operated by Herefordshire Council. It sits less than 100m from the River Wye. Their own pollution map shows contamination spreading into homes, parks, and sports fields, yet none of those sites face the same treatment.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Polluter Pays Principle, the Council as the polluter is responsible for monitoring and remediation, to date no mitigation has ever been taken. They are charging us to monitor their own pollution trail. We’ve done everything right. They’ve ignored their legal duties.

We need your support.

I can't thank the Ross Town Councillors enough for their ongoing support. I have never been more proud to be assisted by such a great team. A special shout out to Danny Lister, Milly Boylan and Katie Fowler who have above and beyond in there help towards the ongoing issue.
