This Friday, we are trying something a bit special on the bar snacks menu. We’ve teamed up with the brilliant folks over at Companyhfx, who bake out of their fantastic micro-bakery just down the road in Luddendenfoot. If you haven’t had anything from them yet, you are in for a treat as it’s handmade, slow-proved, and about as fresh and honest as food gets.

Starting this Friday from 4pm until 9pm, we’re kicking off our very first, of many hopefully, Focaccia Friday.

No fuss, no overcomplicating things. We’re serving their fresh, pillowy focaccia on a slate alongside generous glugs of finest sourced olive oil and a rich velvety eight-year-old balsamic vinegar. Tear off a piece, dip it deep, and let it do the mouth-talking. It’s absolutely spot-on for sharing across the table with mates over a pint or simply as an easy bar snack to accompany a decent glass of w**e after a long week.

When you call in for a board, you aren't just supporting our old stone walls, you’re putting money straight back into an independent local micro-baker working magic right here in the valley. That kind of local community cycle has kept places like ours ticking along for hundreds of years, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

So wander down out of the cold, grab a table by the fire, tear into some proper bread, and let us know what you reckon. We’ll have the lights warm, the drinks poured, and the boards ready from 4pm. See you at the bar! xx

Autumn Mornings in the Snug and time to slow down by the hearth
There’s a distinct shift in the Yorkshire air once October truly settles in. The mornings turn crisp, a low mist hangs over the dale, and the old stone walls of the inn seem to sigh with relief as another hectic summer draws to a close. For seven centuries, this place has offered shelter from the bite of the weather, and honestly, there is no place I’d rather be when the frost starts gathering than tucked into the snug.

The mornings turn crisp, a low mist hangs over the dale, and the old stone walls of the inn seem to sigh with relief as another hectic summer draws to a close. For seven centuries, this place has offered shelter from the bite of the weather, and honestly, there is no place I’d rather be when the frost starts gathering than tucked into the snug.

Summer has its charm with our bustling b**r garden/car park and busy lunch services, but autumn is when a pub like ours truly comes into its own. The snug has always been the hidden heart of the pub for quiet comfort. It’s the spot where previous owners like us would sit to catch their breath between cellar checks, and it’s still the finest place to lose track of an hour or two. I love nothing more than tucking myself at table 14 and writing these blogs!

With the morning chill biting at your nose, there’s nothing quite like walking through the dark timber door, leaving the damp world behind, and sinking into a corner with a fresh coffee and the daily paper or magazine. We even have a book corner where you can take any book you like, a gift from us to you... or bring one into swap.

We’ve set our morning hours to make dropping in as easy and unhurried as possible. We are open for morning coffees from 09:30 to 12:00, Monday through Friday, and from 10:00 to 12:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Parking is straightforward, with spaces right outside the front door, so you won’t have to battle the elements just to get inside. If you’re in a rush on the school run, walking the dog along the river or dashing off to work, our entire hot drinks menu is available for takeout as well.

Before you finish your brew, though, keep an eye on the snug we’ve got a new addition arriving within the next month, and regulars have already started taking guesses what it might be.

What do you reckon it might be? No, it's not our Father Christmas coming down the chimney!

Well, anyone who knows us knows that around here, Tim takes two things very seriously: good hospitality and keeping everyone properly cosy and warm with his constant roaring fires. We do love our fires, and as the winter nights start creeping closer, we think you’re going to love what’s about to take pride of place up in the snug.

Pop by this week, grab a corner of the snug, and see in the new season the old fashioned way. The coffee machine is on and the seat by the hearth is waiting for you xx
