Namaste everyone! 🙏
Please note that Kathmandu Gurkha will be CLOSED on Wednesday, October 21st, as our team will be celebrating Vijaya Dashami, the main day of the Dashain festival! We will reopen for normal hours on Thursday, October 22nd.
For those who might not be familiar with it, Dashain is the biggest and most auspicious Hindu festival for the Nepalese community. Here is a little glimpse into what makes this time of year so incredibly special to us:
✨ What is Dashain?
Dashain is a ten day festival that honors the victory of good over evil. It is a time for family, spiritual renewal, and giving thanks for the harvest.
🌾 How is it celebrated?
October 21st is Vijaya Dashami, the pinnacle of the festival. Families gather together, and elders place "Tika"—a mixture of red vermillion powder, yogurt, and rice—on the foreheads of younger relatives. Elders also present them with "Jamara," which are sacred yellow-green barley shoots that were planted on the very first day of the festival. Along with the Tika and Jamara, elders bestow blessings for prosperity, health, and happiness.
❤️ Why is it important?
Beyond its religious roots, Dashain is ultimately about deep connection and family roots. It is the time of year when people travel long distances to return home, share grand traditional feasts, and seek the wisdom of their elders.
Our team will be taking this Wednesday to be with our families, share meals, and exchange blessings. We can't wait to welcome you back on Thursday and share our festive joy with you all!
Happy Dashain to everyone celebrating, and a wonderful week to all our amazing customers! 🌺
