Talbot Taphouse a pub as it used to be The Talbot Taphouse is a traditional Victorian ‘flat iron’ shaped pub. The Talbot Taphouse is a little different.

Built as a Shipstone’s alehouse, to serve the thirsty community of local miners and steelworkers, it had a reputation as the best cellar in Ripley. Our ales are cooled on the original stone stillage, designed to keep cask ale in perfect condition long before refridgeration was commonplace. It is the perfect place to celebrate our national drink, cask conditioned ale in all its guises. Local real ales, served alongside all that it interesting, exciting and challenging - including traditional ciders, quality continental and locally brewed lagers, quirky Belgium ale and hop-charged American microbrewed beers, served from the bottle, cask or keg. It is as a pub used to be, serving a full pint of locally brewed beer in an environment where conversation rules, a place to sit comfortably with a pint and the paper or to meet friends - new and old.

👀TALBOT TALES #6 BEFORE IT WAS A CAR PARK…

Most people probably wouldn’t give The Talbot car park a second thought.

But until the early 1960s, there was a small shop standing where the car park is today.

Latterly owned by Outrams, it sold the sort of everyday bits you’d expect from a traditional corner shop and even paraffin for lamps and heaters from a large barrel inside.

Another little piece of Butterley Hill that’s completely disappeared from view.

🍺TALBOT TALES #5 THE MERRY MONK

This little chap on the bar is known as The Merry Monk, an old piece of Marston’s pub history and there’s a story behind how he ended up at The Talbot

Our landlord used to deliver to a customer while working for a wholesale company and for about three years he joked every week about taking this home with him. The answer was always no… until the week he left and said he was off to take over a pub.

That time, the customer handed it over with one condition: never sell it, and if he ever came to visit he wanted to see it sitting on the bar.

Safe to say, The Merry Monk found the right home 🍻

🐕 TALBOT TALES #4, But Why “The Talbot”?👀

You’ve probably seen the dog on the sign plenty of times… but there’s a reason it’s there.

A Talbot was an old breed of hunting hound, now extinct, and the name became associated with inns and pubs across Britain. CAMRA records other historic Talbot pubs as being named after the old hunting dog too.

So the dog in our sign isn’t just decoration, it’s a little nod to the history behind the name The Talbot 🐾

The pub itself has been part of Ripley since the 19th century, originally built as a Shipstones pub, so that name has been around here for a long time.

The midweek bar has had a shakeup with a few returning and new pours joining the lineup at The Talbot Taphouse.

👀 TALBOT TALES #3 FROM THE TALBOT IN TO THE TALBOT TAPHOUSE.

Same pub. A different chapter in its history.

Back in 2009, the Talbot Inn was taken over by local brewery Amber Ales, becoming the brewery’s first pub. The pub was renamed The Talbot Taphouse and reopened on 16th December 2009.

At the time, the idea was to bring the pub back to life while restoring some of its original Victorian character. The Talbot Taphouse had actually been closed since the previous July before reopening as the Amber Ales brewery tap.

The reopening clearly made an impression too, with contemporary CAMRA coverage reported the launch was well attended by locals and CAMRA members.

Amber Ales is no longer behind The Talbot today, but one thing from that chapter remained:

The Taphouse name. 🍺

And more than 15 years later, it’s the name many people now know the pub by.
