Weymouth Town Council has confirmed there is no sewage spill affecting Weymouth Beach after an earlier report caused unnecessary concern among residents, businesses and visitors.
The council said information suggesting there had been a sewage discharge was received from a partner organisation and then published by a local media outlet before the facts had been properly verified. After investigating, the council confirmed the report was incorrect, stating there was “currently no sewage spill affecting Weymouth Beach.”
At no point were there any warnings displayed on South West Water’s WaterFit Live Bathing Water Map, which provides real time information on bathing water quality and storm overflow activity. There are also no raw sewage outfalls directly onto Weymouth Beach.
Despite that, the inaccurate report spread quickly, creating unnecessary concern during one of the busiest periods of the year for the town. Local businesses rely heavily on tourism, and unverified claims about sewage on the beach have the potential to damage Weymouth’s reputation and deter visitors.
Responsible journalism is about checking facts before publication, particularly when official data is readily available. In this case, a simple check of the live WaterFit map, or confirmation with the relevant authorities, would have shown there was no evidence of a sewage incident. Instead, an inaccurate story was published first, with the facts established afterwards.
