Community champion Kuia from our Belvedere store has fought breast cancer twice so knows how difficult it can be for people to talk about their own diagnosis and treatment – which is why she's always ready to be a listening ear and a friendly face to chat to.

She's a passionate supporter of our Tickled Pink breast cancer campaign which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. In that time Tickled Pink has raised £100 million to change the outcomes of breast cancer in the UK, working with charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!.

Kuia said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and the progress which has been achieved over the past 30 years is remarkable. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer the first time at the age of 28 I was just given a leaflet, and that's it. I didn't know anyone my age who'd had breast cancer and I never knew success stories either. Some people couldn't even say the word cancer, they'd cross the street to avoid me. People even thought it was contagious! Now there's support networks and groups out there and you can contact nurses online. Access to information is a lot easier and there are new remedies and treatments too.

"I'm very open about having had breast cancer. In my job I meet a lot of people who have been diagnosed and are scared. Everybody's journey is different, but it's nice sometimes to see somebody who has got through the other side. I'm very open about what I've been through and I do a lot of awareness stands for Tickled Pink which involve talking to customers and handing out leaflets. Sometimes people just want to talk to someone about their diagnosis and they are in a bit of shock."

Jane has worked at Asda for 25 years, 9 of those spent at Asda Rhyl, currently in bakery department

She's a keen supporter of Tickled Pink and volunteered to share her story.

She told me she always attended her mammogram when called for appointment. In April 2026 she found a small lump that didn't go away. Naturally she was very concerned and after worrying about it for a long while, she spoke to a friend of hers who had been through cancer. Her friend told her she needed to go and see the doctor and eventually she plucked up the courage and went to her GP.

The GP did an urgent referral to the Breast Clinic at the local hospital.

She said she went through lots of different emotions after the appointment, about ' what if', 'why me', her family.

At the hospital she was greeted by a lovely nurse, who talked her through all the tests, a mammogram a scan. It was a very thorough check and she was kept informed at every step.

After the tests, she was given the fabulous news that the "lump was nothing". Jane said to say she was "over the moon", is an understatement. She had mentally prepared herself to hear bad news.During the consultation she told the doctor that she felt she had wasted their time. The doctor said that if she sees 10 people in one day and nine of them are fine, that is a good day and she would much rather people go and get checked out. ( it is never a waste of time ).Jane asked me to stress to everyone, male and female, if you ever find anything that is 'not right', it is so important to go and see a Dr and get checked out. Remember, you are not wasting anyone's time. She has her next mammogram booked for April 2027 and will most definitely be going to the appointment. She said she regularly checks her breasts and reminds her family and friends to do so.I would like to thank Jane for telling me her story and for allowing it to be shared, in the hope it helps someone else – Diane, Asda community champion

18/10/2026

Helping a mum who gave birth in the car park of our Ipswich store inspired our colleague Charmaine to train as a midwife – and after three years at university, including placements at Ipswich Hospital and helping with 40 births – she's now fully qualified.

Charmaine said: "I was just going home and walking across the car park with a colleague when we heard what was going on and went over to help. The dad had just taken the baby and put it on mum. We rang the ambulance and got towels for the baby and waited for the ambulance to come. It was just a beautiful moment."

Charmaine has worked at Asda alongside her studies. She's looking for midwife opportunities, but hasn't ruled continuing in a part-time capacity with Asda. She said: "I sometimes see ladies who I've helped deliver their babies out shopping in Asda and they say to me 'hi, what are you doing here?' Working in the hospital and Asda was such a contrast though. I'd be delivering babies one day and then stacking shelves the next. Everyone at the store is very friendly and they've been very accommodating and supportive of me when I've been studying. It's been really lovely. Customers are really nice too and they know all about my studying."

Robert, the store's produce manager, said: “I’m so proud of Charmaine for balancing her work alongside her midwife course. It’s not easy managing both, and the effort she’s put into it deserves recognition. It’s great to see her working towards something she’s passionate about and I wish her all the best in the future."

16/10/2026

As part of the marketing team at Asda, Katie has been helping raise awareness of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign for the last 18 years – and she says its messages of regularly checking yourself and knowing what to look for were critical when she got her own breast cancer diagnosis.

Katie used a guide from Tickled Pink charity partner CoppaFeel! to make sure she was properly checking her breasts. And when she felt a lump during one of her routine checks in September 2024 she knew she needed to get it looked at. She said: "Because I’ve been involved in Tickled Pink throughout my time with Asda I was exposed to all the important messages, so was really good at regularly checking myself and knew how to do it and what to look out for. I use the CoppaFeel! infographic showing how to check properly, including under the armpits. That was crucial because I had such a good routine and good rigour. That’s why I had noticed that change and was able to monitor that. Even before my diagnosis, Tickled Pink added value to my life because I knew to be vigilant."

And after her diagnosis, support from Tickled Pink charity partner Breast Cancer Now made a huge difference: "One of the first things they gave me after my diagnosis was from Breast Cancer Now with all of the terms I was likely to hear and information on what to expect. That gave me a lot of comfort and hope and I felt quite positive going into my treatment. I used the Breast Cancer Now forum during my treatment and met ladies who were in a similar position to me. You feel lonely and like you are the only person in the world going through it, but the forum helped me get through it. And after I had finished my treatment I did the Moving Forward course which is funded by money raised by Tickled Pink. You work out your plan, talk about how you feel, what a new normal might look like and how to find your place in the world again."

Katie returned to work in February and is using her experience, and her marketing expertise, to help other women in a similar situation. She uses her Instagram account to document her experience. She's been directly involved with Tickled Pink this year, including the Kylie Minogue Tickled Pink T-shirt launch. She said: "It’s amazing to work on. When I came back into the business people were a bit reluctant to get me involved with Tickled Pink in case it was triggering for me, but I was like ‘let me at it!’ and couldn’t wait to get involved."

Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. 🎀

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It was a great pleasure to be able to present a donation on behalf of Asda Rhyl to Angelaires Morris Dancers.

Anna-Maria said the donation will be used as a raffle prize, to help them raise much needed funding for the groups outfits.

They all work tirelessly, to make it a great success. Such a lovely group and always a pleasure to see them in store.

13/10/2026

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

09/10/2026

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

Working as a community champion allows me to meet lots of new people and bring lots of pleasure to them.

I have just had the absolute pleasure to present a cheque from the Asda Foundation for £16,500,to Rhyl Community Association.

To celebrate the presentation of the cheque, one of the many local groups that regularly attend the centre, came to join in and have a picture taken.

My customer services manager Liane, came along with me to celebrate the special occasion and congratulate Helen, one of the committee members.

Helen explained that the money has already been allocated and will be used to do urgent repairs following a bad leak. A new roof is required, along with lots of water damage repairs to the showers and other areas.

The repairs are essential for the centre, so it can continue to create a warm, safe environment, where the whole community can come together to enjoy the wide range of events and activities.

The centre's role shouldn't be underestimated, as it has a very positive impact on people of all ages from the local community. It is a well used venue and a valued community hub and the committee and trustees send big thanks, for the much-needed grant.

Anyone who has been shopping in store recently may have noticed the Asda Pudsey Fun Challenge board, stood near the checkouts. We were asking the customers to choose the store's challenge.

Here at Asda Rhyl, the three challenges for myself the Community Champion, were:-1 Trolley Collection, in the car park, to ensure there were Trolleys for our customers.

2 50,000 steps in and around the store.

3 A Sponsored Silence.

I can announce that customers and colleagues have voted (by placing a gold star on their selection).

On Saturday 31st October I will be doing a Sponsored Silence 🤫, whilst I am in work, trying to raise funds for BBC Children in Need.

For anyone who has met me and particularly those that know me, will realise this is going to be a VERY TOUGH challenge. Friends, family and work colleagues have been asked to sponsor me, to encourage me and show their support for Children in Need.

For the amazing customers who support us all year round, I will be the one in a Pudsey Onesie, in and around the store, trying desperately hard to stay quiet raising money for CIN. I will wear a t shirt to remind everyone that I most certainly am not being rude by not talking to them. (I just have to remain 🤫).

It will be lovely to see you, and as always, thank you for your support.

We are celebrating 30 years of Tickled Pink here at Asda.

Tickled Pink is amazing and promotes a fabulous community spirit and raises awareness to check yourself regularly, as early diagnosis is the key.

Our fabulous customers support Asda with Tickled Pink, by donating in store and buying selected products around the store.

We strive to raise awareness and funding so we can continue the excellent work, with it's charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel.

Look out in store for the Glitter Ball T-Shirt, the design was created by Kylie Minigue, t shirt is in baby Pink and all profits from the sales will be donated to the charity.

I was humbled this weekend by all the people who stopped to donate or have a go on the Tombola, it was really appreciated. All proceeds go to Tickled Pink.

I spoke to men and women whilst I was doing a Tickled Pink tombola, they all had life stories to share about cancer. One gentleman said his wife had cancer twice and recovered both times, he said it was because of all the research that she had recovered and that we are doing a marvelous job at Asda. He made a donation in his wife's memory. A very big heartfelt thank you, to colleagues who showed support and to the fabulous customers, who always rise to the occasion. 💖 💗 💘 – Diane, Asda community champion

Singsation Pop Choir were established in July 2013, a friendly and enthusiastic ladies choir, for women aged 18 and over.

They bring together singers who share a love for music, friendship and performing.

Anyone wanting to join, the choir rehearse at Festival Church, Towyn every Thursday between 7.30 pm - 9.30 pm.

In 2024, Vicky took over as musical director, bringing her experience and passion for music to the choir.

Singsation Pop Choir enjoys performing at Community events and venues, most recently at Preststyn carnival 2026 and VE Day celebrations.

Vicky told me the choir also visit residential care homes across the local area and they love performing and encouraging residents to join in with a good old fashioned sing along.

Singsation Pop Choir is more than singing, it's about friendship, community, supporting good causes and bringing people together through the joy of music.

Vicky and the choir thanked me for putting them forward and sent a BIG thanks to Asda Foundation for the £500. She told me they will be using the money to promote local charity events, purchasing necessary equipment and promotional materials. It will be a great help to the choir.

I was delighted to find out on my return from holidays, that Young at Heart had been awarded £500 by the Asda Foundation.

Young at Heart meet every Thursday afternoon at Kinmel Bay Community Centre.

The group has grown in size since my first visit and they now have a committee, who are really proactive and lighten the load for Jenny and Hughie.

The group brings so much pleasure to those that attend and is a great way to reduce isolation and encourage social interaction for the over 60s.

When I visited the group last week to present the cheque , Jenny advised that they were planning to do a fish and chip supper for everyone and subsidise the cost of the Christmas Dinner dance with the funding

Jenny asked me to thank the Asda Foundation on behalf of the group. She said to let them know that so many of the members who attend the group, get to experience so many things, that without their funding, they may not be able to enjoy.

Jenny said the biggest aim of the group is to ensure inclusivity for all the people who attend.

It is such a lovely group and I couldn't be happier for them.

I had the great pleasure to be invited along to Holy Trinity Community Cafe to assist with a fun filled game of Play Your Cards Right.

On behalf of Asda Rhyl, I took along a donation of coffee and biscuits, for the enjoyment of the community.

David, one of the hard working volunteers, was fabulous as the card dealer and Debbie another of the hard working volunteers, handed out chocolates as consolation prizes. It was such good fun and everyone joined in.

The Cafe is set in the lovely grounds of St Thomas Church, Rhyl and is open to any member of the public. It is open on Mondays and Tuesdays between 11am - 2.30pm.

It's such a warm and friendly group, everyone is made to feel so welcome. It is growing very popular as more and more people attend.

Paula and the fabulous volunteers are creating a place where everyone feels like they belong and new friendships are made.
