Yes, I really am smelling my wood finish…

This is Natasha Craig’s Wood Oil, a natural blend of linseed, h**p and orange oils — and it smells absolutely gorgeous.

Here I’m using it to finish an ash platter. I love watching the oil bring the grain to life, adding warmth and depth while still leaving the wood looking and feeling beautifully natural.

My usual process is three thin coats over three days, allowing each coat time to soak in before applying the next. Then comes the bit that’s easy to forget: giving the oil time to fully cure.

After a couple of weeks, you’re left with a lovely natural, fully cured, water-resistant finish that still looks and feels like wood rather than a coating sitting on top.

It’s a really satisfying finish to use — and the orange oil makes applying it smell rather wonderful too.

Well, summer’s definitely over now but for the next few days I’m gonna share some of my summer workshop highlights with you.

Here’s a couple of photos from the end of busy Association of Woodturners youth training day. The 4 students had a great day learning how to make apples and plates. 🍎

Thanks to Neils Woodcrafts for gifting me the spalted beech. It was quite soft, so tricky to hold on screw chucks, but we persevered and them apples came good in the end!

I’m a bit sad that’s the final youth training day of this year, but happy that I’ll be seeing some of my students at the Festival of Woodturning next month. They’ve taken up the offer of youth bursaries to be able to come along for free, so thank you very much AWGB. 👍

It’s been wonderful to look back on Skilled.Seen and see that the exhibition now has a permanent online catalogue.

Being part of a project that celebrated the creativity and craftsmanship of women, trans and non-binary people working with wood was a real privilege. I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Sylva Foundation, Kat and all the organisers, makers and volunteers who made it happen.

If you didn’t get the chance to visit, or you’d like another look, you can now explore the exhibition online, discover the makers behind each piece and read the stories that brought the exhibition to life.

Thank you for creating something that will continue to inspire long after the exhibition has closed.
