Yesterday, we did a thing.

Following our dad’s recent cancer diagnosis, we decided to run a normal day at the gym but donate the profits to Cancer Research UK.

What followed was a packed day, banging tunes from our DJ, an excellent self-defence class, and incredible support from our Gecko clients, team members, friends and wider community.

Cancer is life-changing for everyone involved, not only for the person receiving the diagnosis, but for the family and friends supporting them too.

Yesterday was one of those days that reminds you just how kind and generous people can be, and how powerful community and positive energy can be in helping us all move forward.

Thank you to everyone who trained, donated, helped, shared and supported the day. It meant more to us than you know. 🙏

🧡 CLASSES FOR A CAUSE 🧡

On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th July, every Gecko gym class attended will help support the incredible work of Cancer Research UK.

Every penny from your session will be donated directly to Cancer Research UK, helping fund research that has contributed to doubling cancer survival rates in the UK over the last 50 years.

Simply book your classes through the app as normal and train knowing your session is making a difference.

🎧 Live DJ set from our very own Jenson to keep the energy high throughout the day.

🥋 Special guest from will be joining us on Friday at 4pm to deliver a practical and engaging Self Defence session.

Whether you’re a regular member or haven’t visited us for a while, we’d love to see as many of you as possible getting involved.

Because sometimes exercise can be about more than improving your own health.

It’s about helping others too.

Exciting changes are coming to Gecko 🔨

To continue providing the best possible environment for our clients, the gym will be temporarily closed while we carry out refurbishment works and refresh the space.

We’re investing back into Gecko to ensure our facilities continue to match the quality of coaching, rehabilitation and support we strive to provide every day.

Thank you for your patience whilst we make these improvements, we can’t wait to welcome you back and show you the finished result.

Meet Toby

Toby is 15 years old and has been part of our Young Athlete Programme for the past five years.

The next part might surprise some people, but it reflects many of the young people we work with at Gecko, Toby isn’t a fan of traditional team sports.

Not every young person fits into the typical school sports model, and that’s perfectly okay.

Over the years, Toby has developed the fundamental movement skills, strength and confidence that come from consistent participation in our programme. Those physical foundations have helped him discover activities that genuinely interest him.

Today, Toby is a keen climber and enjoys cross-country running, pursuing activities that suit his interests and strengths rather than feeling pressured into sports he doesn’t enjoy.

Alongside this, he is developing something even more important: lifelong habits around health, movement and exercise.

At Gecko, we believe success isn’t simply about producing better athletes. It’s about helping young people build confidence, develop physical literacy and discover a lifelong enjoyment of movement.

Building healthy habits, movement skills and a love of being active can take many different forms.

Diagnosis is Key 🔑

Getting the diagnosis right can often be the difference between a successful rehabilitation journey and a persistent, recurring injury.

Olivia, who is part of the Team GB Judo pathway, presented to Gecko following a traumatic shoulder injury sustained during training.

The shoulder is an incredibly complex joint. Its remarkable mobility enables high-level athletic performance, but this complexity can also make diagnosis and rehabilitation particularly challenging. Successful rehabilitation isn’t simply about reducing pain - it’s about restoring strength, confidence, function and enabling a safe return to sport.

At Gecko, we combine detailed clinical assessment with diagnostic imaging where appropriate. The combination of advanced clinical reasoning, musculoskeletal ultrasound and a multidisciplinary approach helps us build a more complete picture of the injury and guide management decisions.

In Olivia’s case, despite unremarkable X-rays, clinical examination and ultrasound findings raised suspicion of more significant underlying pathology. Further investigation with MRI subsequently confirmed bone contusion and traumatic subacromial bursitis.

Understanding the nature, location and extent of the injury allowed us to develop an individualised, evidence-based rehabilitation programme, helping to guide exercise selection, progression and realistic return-to-sport timelines.

For athletes participating in high-demand sports, an accurate diagnosis doesn’t just explain the pain - it helps shape the entire rehabilitation journey.
The diagnosis doesn’t always change the injury, but it can significantly change the outcome.

Imogen has made outstanding progress in her netball journey this season. Her hard work helped her team, Eagles Netball Club, achieve an impressive 6th-place finish at the Under 14 National Club Finals.

Imogen has developed massively as an athlete, continually pushing herself to improve and embracing every opportunity to learn. Strength and conditioning through our Young Athlete Programme has played an important role in her development, helping her build the strength, speed and physical resilience needed to perform at a high level and contribute to her team’s success.

For young female athletes in particular, strength training is about far more than performance. The latest research continues to show that appropriately supervised strength and conditioning can improve athletic development, build confidence and help prepare athletes for the demands of sports such as netball, where jumping, landing and changes of direction are a constant part of the game.

We’re incredibly proud of the progress Imogen has made. Her success is a reflection of her hard work, commitment and willingness to keep learning.

It’s never too late.

At 87 years old, Terry has recently started his strength training journey.

Like many people, Terry believed there was very little that could be done at his age to improve his health and physical function. Following an initial assessment with our physiotherapy team to address some long standing concerns, we developed a personalised plan to help him move and feel better.

Fast forward a few months and, with guidance from our physiotherapists and Strength & Conditioning Coach Jack, Terry is absolutely smashing it.

Strength, balance, confidence and independence can all be improved at any age.

The biggest mistake is believing it’s too late to start.
