Do you have an opinion as to whether the pub should be saved? Should the idea of a community pub be explored?
Do the villagers want to try and Save The Pub?
There is a small group exploring the possibility of establishing The Red Lion as a Community Pub but before any action really starts, we need to find out whether the villagers of Upper and Lower Basildon want this.
Community pubs can work well, as the community can become really engaged with the business as they are shareholders as well as customers. There are a number of different business models, the ones that work well combine a professional manager /tenant with a level of volunteer effort. But to make it work the pub needs to be Freehold, separate to any brewery. To do this costs money, likely to be £500K +.
At this stage, we are trying to establish the level of interest in the villages to look into this. If there is enough interest, then there'll be a public meeting to set up a Steering committee and kick off the project.
