๐ Uncovering Over 400 Years of History continued๐๏ธ
Over the past few months we've been researching the fascinating history of our building using original deeds, leases, Land Registry documents and records held at the Dorset History Centre.
What the surviving records tell us so far:
๐ A borough lease relating to the site dates from 1604.
๐ The Dove Alehouse is recorded in 1612, making it one of the earliest known confirmed documented licensed premises in Weymouth.
๐ We've traced the property's history through historic leases, deeds and conveyances, following its evolution from The Dove Alehouse to the Black Dog Inn over the centuries.
๐ Each newly discovered document helps us build a clearer picture of the people who owned, occupied and worked here, revealing over 400 years of continuous history.
As part of our research, we've even started creating historical maps from the original deeds, burgage records and land descriptions to reconstruct how the property and its neighbouring plots looked centuries ago. It's amazing to see the documentary evidence brought back to life.
But every discovery raises another question...
We're now investigating what stood here before 1612.
With the Greyfriars Friary only a short distance away, we're exploring whether there may have been an even earlier hostelry or Travellers' Rest on this site, as suggested by the historical report carried out recently, providing food and lodging for pilgrims, merchants and travellers visiting medieval Melcombe Regis.
At this stage, this is an area of ongoing research rather than a proven fact. We're continuing to search medieval deeds, leases, burgage records, maps and archive material to see just how far back the history of this remarkable site really goes.
Can you help?
We're particularly interested in the families connected with the earliest known history of the property.
