Sometimes a small gesture can say quite a lot.

We wanted to surprise our team with a little something to say thank you, not just for the work they do, but for the care, creativity and energy they bring to the Workhouse every day. Our team is at the heart of what we do, and recognising that contribution matters.

The chocolate bars we chose are from ARTHOUSE Unlimited, an incredible charity that champions the artistic talents and skills of adults living with diverse learning and physical disabilities.

The artwork created by their artists is licensed to their business arm, which turns it into a wonderful range of products, including these chocolate bars. The sales revenue helps support artist beneficiary awards and sustain the charity, helping its work continue for years to come.

So this little bar of chocolate represents more than a thank you. It’s a way of recognising our own team, while supporting another organisation that puts creativity, opportunity and people at its heart.

And perhaps that’s what we like most about it: a small act of kindness can travel a little further than you think.

One of the things we love here at The Workhouse in Presteigne, is the incredibly creative people who make up our team, and we think their talents and achievements deserve celebrating.

Today we would like to congratulate Emily, who has been awarded the h.Art residency for 2027, h.Art Herefordshire Art Week

Emily not only works with us in the cafe but behind the camera she has a wonderful eye for capturing atmosphere, detail and those little moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, something you can see in this beautiful collection of photographs she took for us.

h.Art describes Emily as ‘a young emerging creative who will be bringing a fresh perspective to h.Art next year, using illustration, photography and social media to help develop the story of the trail.’

We are so pleased to see Emily’s creativity and talent recognised, and even more pleased to have her as part of our team.

Rose Bamford, Owner of The Workhouse, says, “we believe that supporting the people who work with us also means supporting the things they care about, their creativity and their own endeavours outside of The Workhouse.”

We hope to share a little more of this with you going forward.

Bank holiday opening ✨

We are open today, Sunday 30th August, and tomorrow, Bank Holiday Monday, from 10am–4pm.

There’s also 20% off all rugs throughout the bank holiday weekend, so if you are in Presteigne, do pop in and have a look.

A little rain after weeks of heat feels rather welcome.

And with Presteigne Festival now underway and Presteigne Open Studios beginning tomorrow, there’s plenty happening around town over the Bank Holiday weekend.

If you are visiting Presteigne for the Festival, exploring the studios and exhibitions, or simply spending a few days in the Welsh Marches, The Workhouse Gallery & Café is here for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, freshly baked croissants, and cake. Lunch is served from 12–3pm.

We will be open throughout the Bank Holiday weekend, including Monday 31 August, when we’ll be opening specially.

A place to pause between events, meet friends, look around the gallery and gift shop or to simply take a little time over lunch or coffee.

We look forward to welcoming everyone visiting Presteigne this weekend.

Pick of the week from the menu 🍽️

Roasted red pepper hummus, olives, toasted sourdough, Asian sesame slaw and green salad, as flavoursome as it is colourful.

And a little detail I particularly love: the hummus is made with Bold Bean Co Queen Chickpeas. If you know, you know… 👀

A seriously good lunch, with plenty of texture, colour and flavour in every bite.

A few weeks away and I’ve come back to The Workhouse to discover SO many lovely new things… and honestly, I’m a little bit obsessed.

First up, the The Workhouse Gallery & Cafe favourite that keeps flying off the shelves: Savon de Marseille. We’ve got some new scents in that we haven’t stocked before, alongside the familiar favourites.

Then I spotted these little pebble soaps 🫧
Handmade with natural ingredients and vegan friendly, each one looks just like a tiny pebble. The gift sets come with their own little porcelain dish, or you can pick up an individual pebble for your own bathroom. They’d make such a lovely little gift… although I wouldn’t blame you for keeping one for yourself.

And then there were these. 🐟 A sequinned fish purse.

Just because.

Or perhaps a shrimp?
They immediately took me back to being a child and taking a little purse of spending money on school trips. I’m not sure I ever quite grew out of the joy of having a fun purse.

If fish and shrimp aren’t quite your thing, these colourful floral multi-purpose bags with their frills and tassels are rather gorgeous too.

And then I was completely stopped in my tracks by this floral enamel cup. I’ve always associated enamelware with simple blocks of colour, so seeing it covered in flowers made me very happy indeed. 🌸

Finally, our incense has been replenished, so there’s plenty to choose from again, from positive energy to pure relaxation, there’s a scent for every mood.

It’s rather lovely being back and discovering everything that’s appeared while I’ve been away. There’s something new around every corner at The Workhouse.
