A Little Piece of Tea Room History 🫖
Did you know that the tradition of Afternoon Tea dates back to the 1840s?
It is often credited to Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, who found herself feeling hungry between lunch and the late evening meal. To satisfy her appetite, she began enjoying tea with a light snack in the afternoon. Before long, she was inviting friends to join her, and a beloved British tradition was born.
What started as a simple afternoon refreshment soon became a fashionable social occasion, bringing people together over tea, cakes and conversation.
Today, Afternoon Tea remains one of Britain's most cherished traditions, and at Olde Pennys Tea Room we're proud to continue that tradition with a warm welcome, homemade treats and plenty of vintage charm. ☕🍰💕
