We met at the market, back when I was a market trader. From there, a real friendship was born, before anything else. Only later, over time, did we decide together to take on this adventure of FILI’S.

Robert is proof that a good mentor doesn’t just give you advice, he opens your eyes. Trusting the right person means recognizing that you can always learn from those close to you, and that’s been one of the most important factors in this journey, maybe even more than our pizza recipe.

🎫 The Sicily post office ticket hustle
Someone shows up early, grabs a bunch of low-numbered queue tickets from the machine, then sells them to people (often elderly or in a rush) who don’t want to wait in line.
Why it works: Italian post offices aren’t just for mail, people go there for bills, pensions, banking too, so queues get long, making a good ticket worth paying for.
It’s mostly a small, informal hustle rather than organized crime, though sometimes the same people run the “help you park for a tip” racket too.
Why it keeps going: police don’t prioritize it, the amounts are too small for people to bother reporting, and in some neighborhoods it’s just accepted as “how things work.” A few crackdowns in Catania and Palermo even found people running these hustles while also collecting welfare benefits.

Everyone thinks “mafia” means suits, hierarchy, a guy giving orders in a back room. That’s one version. But mafia is also just a behavior, a logic. You can bump into “mafioso” thinking in everyday life in Sicily without ever going near an actual organization.

Sicily is beautiful and complicated. Mafia isn’t a myth, it’s culture, whether we like it or not. Omertà has cost this island a century of silence, and leaving was my shortcut out. But everything has a price. Grateful the UK gave me what my own country never did. 🇮🇹🇬🇧
