Twin Sails Bridge in Poole is set to reopen in December, nearly four months after it closed due to ‘abnormal creaking noises’ found during a routine inspection.

The bridge, which opened in 2012, has experienced repeated reliability issues since its launch, including a closure in May last year when another fault was identified.

In August, engineers inspected the lifting mechanisms and placed the structure into an upright position. Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) councillors approved £6 million of funding earlier this year to improve the lift system and address ongoing problems.

Preparatory work is underway while specialist materials are awaited for repairs, expected to begin on 15 December and last about a week. Hamworthy Councillor Peter Cooper stated the bridge should be open by 21 December after safety tests, with full traffic reopening the following week.

Glynn Barton, BCP Council’s Chief Operations Officer, said: “Work is due to commence on Twin Sails on 15 December and is anticipated to take around a week, subject to safety testing. Our teams have been carrying out as much preparatory work as possible whilst awaiting for the specialist materials required to arrive in early December.”
