On this day, 21st October 1966, the village of Aberfan experienced a tragedy that would leave an everlasting mark on Wales and the nation.

At 9.13am, a colliery spoil tip collapsed following weeks of heavy rain, sending thousands of tonnes of coal waste down the mountainside and engulfing Pantglas Junior School and nearby homes. In a matter of minutes, 144 lives were lost, including 116 children, many of whom had been looking forward to the start of their half-term holiday.

The courage of the local community and the desperate efforts of those who came to help will never be forgotten, nor will the unimaginable loss suffered by so many families.

Today, 60 years on, we remember those who lost their lives, the families left behind and a community forever changed by that terrible morning.

Aberfan will never be forgotten. 🖤🖤🖤
