This International Women’s Day, I’m celebrating the strong, hardworking women who shaped my life and inspired my journey.

As a working-class woman, a mum to two amazing daughters, and a candidate standing to represent our community, I know how powerful women supporting women can be. It’s also why I care so much about making sure the voices of women in our community are heard and represented.

I’m also thinking about the incredible women right here in Mutley and Greenbank who make our community what it is every single day - the women running local businesses, leading community groups, teaching our children and supporting people through tough times.

Women like Helen at Wilphy's Sandwich Bar, Victoria at The Box Plymouth, Shirley at Providence Inn, Tina at Dawsteps, Mrs Shillabeer at Mount Street Primary School & Nursery Plymouth, the brilliant team at the Trevi Women, students and leaders at University of Plymouth, and Trish and the team at Mutley Greenbank Youth. They, and so many other women getting on with things every day, are the backbone of our neighbourhood.

To my daughters, and to every woman and girl: your voice matters, your dreams matter, and you deserve every opportunity to succeed.

Let’s keep standing together, lifting each other up, and building a community where all women can thrive.
