MATCH REPORT | 🫶
Best performance of the season so far from the Pickering Ladies today, who were really unfortunate not to come away from this fixture with at least a draw, if not more. The team is starting to gel and work hard for each other, and new players are stepping up. A positive indicator for the rest of the season I’m sure.
The first half was fairly even with some good football all-round and chances for both teams making for an entertaining game.
Pickering started really well and took the lead after 7 minutes, excellent battling from Kim to win the ball on the left and play it in to Leila, who finished powerfully from the edge of the box.
Redcar were clearly nervous of Pickering’s pace up front and were defending very deep, encouraging Pickering forward. At the other end Redcar were creating some good openings, and were quick to pounce on any loose ball. They levelled just after the half-hour - allowed too much time on the ball in midfield and they seized the chance. An excellent save from Erin after 35 minutes kept it at 1-1.
Pickering finished the half strongly. On 40 minutes, Chloe’s free kick from 25 yards was tipped on to the crossbar. Just before the break, Mollie went close to restoring Pickering’s lead but it wasn’t to be. All square at half-time.
First fifteen minutes of the second half are probably better left unwritten… an early penalty to Redcar was converted to make it 1-2. On 57 minutes, Redcar broke quickly from a Pickering corner and made it 1-3. Shortly after, Chloe saw red, leaving Pickering to play out the remainder of the match with 10 players.
This seemed to shock the Pickering Ladies into action and they were by far the better team for the remainder of the game.
A wicked corner from Millie in to the back post was well finished by Molly - her first goal for the team. 2-3 with 15 minutes to play.
Pickering kept pushing forward, and Leila was denied the equaliser after 82 minutes by an excellent save from the Redcar keeper.
Pickering ended the game with a succession of free kicks and corners, but weren’t quite able to convert for the equaliser.
Genuinely a performance to be proud of and on another day could have been a very different result. Well played ladies.
