For James it’s the variety of the work and the opportunity to make a positive difference that keeps him volunteering as a Special constable.

The father-of-two is a supervisor in our Demand Hub but in his spare time supports his regular colleagues on the front line.

He said: “I love getting out in the community, helping people and knowing I am having an impact on the place where my family and friends live.

“It also gives you opportunities to do things that others would never see in a lifetime.”

Being a Special is a great way to get professional training, skills and experience that can be used in everyday life and career progression.

It’s also the ideal stepping-stone if you are considering becoming a regular officer.

The rain may have cancelled sports day for the students at Bishop Creighton Academy today, but as we had been asked to go along, we took the opportunity to chat with the year 6 children and answer their questions - of which there were lots!!

This afternoon, our neighbourhood officers met with representatives from Peterborough City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council’s highways officers, and business owners at the Tresham Road site in Orton Southgate to discuss recent issues with car meets and anti-social behaviour.

This is an issue ourselves, councils, highways and the landowners are all working together to resolve as we understand the concern it is causing both businesses and residents in the area.

We will continue to take action against those caught causing anti-social behaviour, driving dangerously or committing traffic offences.

A number of other things were discussed including installing CCTV cameras and looking at other solutions to put in place.

Hamid is a manager in a Cambridgeshire-based company that provides cutting-edge cyber technology worldwide.

But three-and-a-half years ago he also decided he wanted to fulfil a childhood ambition of joining the police, so he started volunteering as a Special.

He now says it was the best decision he ever made.

“Working in response has been an eye-opening experience for me and one that I have thoroughly enjoyed”, he said.

“I have been fortunate to work with amazing colleagues and have felt very welcomed by all.

“The transferable skills you learn as a Special are invaluable. You feel like you make a difference every day and I cannot recommend it enough as a fantastic opportunity.”
