The question we get asked the most is, "Where do we get the name Glover from?" So we did a little digging and found a Facebook group called Perthshire Local, and found some interesting information.

I can't say for definite if this is why we are called The Glover Arms, but it's an interesting read. So grab a cuppa, and here we go!
This is taken from a post on their page in 2023.

Who was the legendary figure known as The Fair Maid of Perth, and how did she become an iconic symbol of Perth's history and culture?
Catherine Glover, often referred to as The Fair Maid of Perth, was a woman who lived during the 14th century. Her story is intertwined with the turbulent times of Scotland's history, where political rivalries and power struggles were rampant. Catherine, despite being a commoner, found herself at the centre of attention due to her exceptional beauty and kind heart.
The city of Perth, often called the Fair City, was the backdrop for Catherine's life. It was a bustling hub of trade and commerce, being strategically situated on the River Tay. Perth was renowned for its vibrant markets, where merchants from all over would gather to sell their goods. The city's architecture showcases a blend of medieval and Georgian styles, forming a unique visual appeal that still remains today.
Catherine's humble abode (The Fair Maid's House on North Port) was nestled within the heart of Perth, a small house that became a symbol of her modesty and simplicity. It was in this house that she lived with her father, Simon Glover, who was a skilled craftsman renowned for his work in the field of glove-making.
The Glover family were well known and well respected within the community, known for their generosity and integrity.
The Fair Maid's story gained prominence when she found herself caught in a love triangle between two powerful men. One of them was Henry Gow, a young armorer known for his strength and courage, and whom she would later marry. The other was Sir Patrick Charteris, a nobleman who desired Catherine's hand in marriage. The love triangle created a whirlwind of emotions and conflicts, captivating the people of Perth and beyond.
Despite her beauty and charm, Catherine remained a symbol of virtue and grace throughout the ordeal.
She faced the challenges presented to her with dignity and strength, refusing to let her fate be decided solely by the men who sought her affections. Her unwavering character and ability to navigate the treacherous waters of love and politics made her an icon of resilience and independence.
Catherine was not only admired for her personal qualities, but also for the impact she had on the culture of the city. Perth, forever captivated by her story, has immortalised Catherine through various forms of art and literature. Poets and writers of the time drew inspiration from her tale, creating ballads and stories that celebrated her beauty and courage.

Today, the legend of The Fair Maid of Perth continues to thrive in the hearts and minds of both locals and visitors. The city pays tribute in various ways, including statues and plaques. These commemorations serve as a reminder of the enduring legacy left by a young woman who embodied the spirit of Perth. As you walk the streets of Perth, you can't help but feel a connection to this remarkable woman whose presence still lingers in the very fabric of the fair city.

Sorry for the long read, but we hope you find this interesting. Thank you to a Perthshire local for sharing this information.
