Our Accommodation consists of 10 unique and comfortable en-suite bedrooms with many of them blessed with magnificent views of the surrounding hills. We’re wishing all the riders taking part in the 2026 Lloyds Tour of Britain Women the very best of luck as the race gets underway today in Cockermouth, with the opening stage showcasing the spectacular landscapes of West Cumbria.

It’s fantastic to see such a prestigious sporting event coming to our part of the world, and shining a spotlight on the incredible towns, villages and scenery we’re lucky enough to call home. ⛰️💚

From all of us here at The Royal Hotel, Dockray, good luck to every rider and team – and we hope everyone heading out to watch gives them a very warm Cumbrian welcome! 👏🚴‍♀️

🥾 Cooler weather this weekend = perfect walking weather!

If you’re looking for a great half-day adventure, Cat Bells is hard to beat.

📍 4.5 miles | Moderate | 2½–3 hours

A classic Wainwright with a rewarding climb, fabulous 360° views across Derwentwater and Keswick, followed by a gentler return along the lakeshore. You can even make a day of it and take the Keswick Launch across Derwentwater to Hawse End. ⛴️

And after all that fresh air? Head back to The Royal for a very well-deserved drink and something good to eat. 🍺

Even better on Sunday... walk first, Sunday roast afterwards. Now that sounds like a plan 😋 (bookings advised please on 017684 82356).

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Looking for ways to entertain the kids during the summer holidays?

One of our favourites is practically on our doorstep – Aira Force. 🌳💦

The family-friendly loop takes you through beautiful ancient woodland alongside Aira Beck, with plenty to keep little explorers interested along the way. Of course, the star of the show is the spectacular 20-metre waterfall, but there’s also the arboretum and the wishing tree area to discover.

It’s a great way to get everyone outdoors, burn off some energy and enjoy one of Ullswater’s best-loved spots – and in summer you can even combine your adventure with an Ullswater steamer stopping at Aira Force pier. 🚢

And the best bit for our guests? Aira Force is just down the road from The Royal, so you can head back afterwards for a well-earned drink, something to eat and maybe a game or two to keep the kids

Meet Monika - and her family!👋❤️

If you've visited The Royal over the last 14 years, there's a very good chance you've met Monika, our brilliant Front of House Manager.

This October, Monika will have been part of The Royal family for an incredible 14 years – and when we say family, we mean it! Over the years her brother, sister-in-law, two neighbours from Poland, both of her children and her husband have all worked here. In fact, Radek, Monika's husband is still our fabulous head chef 👨‍🍳 and Kuba (their son) works here too.

Ask Monika what a typical day looks like and the answer is simple: there isn't one! It can go from quiet to crazy in no time. From rotas, emails and ordering to managing the team, serving meals and, most importantly, looking after our customers, Monika does a bit of everything.

She particularly loves seeing the many familiar faces who return to The Royal year after year, and, despite the occasional crazy day, she says it's still great fun.

After nearly 14 years, she must love us really! 😂❤️

Thank you, Monika, for everything you (and your family) do.

These lovely guests found the perfect way to unwind at The Royal with a cold beer and a game of backgammon. 🎲
